people suck except when they don't | thursday | period 2 | january 14

Loki was sitting on his desk, swinging his legs and waiting for the students to file in and take their seats. He even let them socialize a bit before he hopped up and started talking.

"Welcome back," he said, always polite. "It's good to see so many of you made it back because now we get into the real fun of this course. Last week was just the same ole, same ole. This week, we really find out why people can fucking suck sometimes."

"Today, we're going to talk about your parents, guardians, protectors, caretakers, whatever the fuck you want to call them," he said, rubbing his hands together. "Usually, and I say usually knowing some of you grew up without the benefits of these type of people, these people will be your first exposure to authority. And sometimes? They fucking suck. They don't want you to do anything fun. They want you to do your homework, or your training, or your chores or anything in that fucking realm. And they'll usually throw out rote reasons of improving yourself, improving your grades, improving some shit. Most of that's a bunch of shit, I think. Sure, you'll improve yourself but at what fucking expense? You lose out on fun which can also improve yourself. And they seem to think that doing fucking math or running laps or weeding a garden is going to make you a better person but if you ask them how, they can't fucking tell you."

Loki wondered if he could throw God into this group but decided to hold that back. He really didn't need to be struck down in front of his class after all.

"There are several easy ways to buck this authority, though." And Loki knew just about every fucking trick in the book, thank you. "The easiest way is to just not be there. Of course, this holds the possibility of getting fucking punished so use it sparingly. Unless you're going to leave for good, don't always just not be there. Bargaining might work too. Not always with parents but for those of you that come from places where you're in a military or something of the sort, you might be able to bargain with your CO or leader. Promise to do a shitload of stuff later in exchange for leaving now. Keep it manageable though. Don't promise too much because when you can't do it? You're fucking screwed. You can fake shit too. If you're told to do your homework? Fucking do it. Just do it badly. From what I've found, most parents don't know what the fuck their kids are doing now. You show them a page of scribbled equations that are completely fucking wrong, they'll look at it, think it looks right and let you go. Easy."

Of course, there was always the possibility of running into geniuses but Loki couldn't account for everything.

"Those are just a few fucking possibilities. Giving you all of them would just make the class activity less fucking fun. Today, we're going to see how you'd deal with a parent, guardian, or something of that sort when they try to make you do something you don't fucking want to do. I'll give you a scenario, you stand up and say how you'd deal with it. Anyone can question your choice and you know I'll be questioning anything. Sound good? Good. We'll get started."

Kurt kicked back and put his feet up on his desk, because he had a feeling Loki wouldn't care.

Joan enjoyed Loki's classes.

Azula was only half listening to the lecture, interesting and curse laden as it was. Instead she was slowly but surely getting more and more annoyed with herself for miscalculating.

She never miscalculated before.

Making mistakes like this was nothing but a big annoyance.

"I'd just tell her than instead of just helping, I'd do all the grocery shopping myself while she relaxed at home," Calvin said. "For some reason that usually results in her telling me to just stay home instead."

"Would the girlfriend be able to come with me?" Chuck wondered. "There... could be some combining."

"... Without the making out in Chuck E Cheese." Because that felt like it would be kind of wrong somehow.

"I'd take him to his karate class," Ellie said. She'd likely encourage Chuck to take a class like that anyway. "Then I'd go shopping with my friends and tell him to call my cellphone when the class was finished."

Karla did not blush when she heard her assignment. Not even a little. Mostly by sheer force of will. "Assuming I can't make plans with him later? I'd stage a Healing just as they arrived; one that looks really complicated. Afterwards, I'll be 'too exhausted' to do anything but nap and sneaking out of my chambers back home was easy."

"I'd jus' sneak out," George said with a shrug. "Me mam'll cope fer th' night, an' I'll do it th' next day. Probably."

Wow, now didn't Jak's assignment sound familiar?

A couple years back, his answer would've probably been 'do the courier run as fast as possible and hope for the best'. ... Possibly. He might've also just run off.

Now, what he said was, "Depends on how much they're willing to pay."

Class act.

Yeah, it'd be nice if Papa could still tell her to go do laps, but Makita wasn't about to start falling apart during class. Mission, dammit, and she could curl up and scream it out in the woods somewhere later.

Instead she just shrugged. "It's only ten laps and I like running," she pointed out. "Fighting about it will take more time than just doing it, and then I have leverage if I want something later."

Ew, latrine.

"I'd build a machine that does the cleaning remotely. Probably via cellphone link." She was seriously considering how such a machine would best operate, yes. "Then I can run that from my friend's car, get the job done, have fun, and never have to go anywhere near a dirty toilet."

"Tell my mom she's there to help me clean?" Jacob suggested, because that seemed the easiest way out.

The assignment made her feel a bit guilty, but none-the-less...

"I'd probably just accept it" with a huff and growling and deathglares, "but if I had to get out if, I'd ask if there was some other time when I could serve the detention."

//Sod that,// Jono replied, rolling his eyes. //I'll shove a load into th'bloody wash to appease her and head out th'back door. It isn't as though my parents ever gave a shite in th'first place.//

Life was easier if you didn't give a shite right back, Jono had learned.

Jenny rolled her eyes. "They wouldn't want me for a family portrait anyway. They've got Quantum for that. And if they said they did I'd ask what they were smoking and then go and do what I wanted to anyway. They wouldn't dare stop me." She was Jenny Sparks, after all.

Fiona made her way back to see Loki, hoping he wasn't too terribly upset about the whole trapsing-off-to-Thailand thing.

...she was also very glad she was almost certainly not his TA. Not that she'd mind being his TA, but one was really enough for a semester.

"Loki?"
