Love & Romance, Hollywood Style [Period 4, Class 2]

Drake was deeply engrossed in a book when the students began to arrive to class. Behind him, a piece of chalk was moving by itself on the blackboard, writing out a pair of quotes: "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while" and "I know that a life without love is no life at all."

"And they all lived happily ever after," Drake said after a moment, closing his book. "Most of you have probably heard those words; they're commonly used to end fairy tales and movies inspired by them." He snapped his fingers, and an old-style film projector appeared. "For example, meta for Ever After and The Princess Bride." The projector began to play clips from both the movies.

After the clips had finished, Drake addressed the class again. "So, do you think happily ever after can happen in real life, or is it just a fairy tale? Oh, and Fiona, since you missed the first class, you're my second TA. Surprise!"

Bobby was kind of distractedly taking notes. His roommate hadn't shown up to class and he was trying not to worry about it. Kate was a big girl, after all. She could take care of herself.

"I want to believe, but... No. Not really." Dinah shook her head, and reluctantly said, "Even people who still love each other, there's going to be some one thing that keeps them from being happy. Job, illness, some kind of screw-up. Maybe people go looking for that, even." Or maybe someone had to believe that, this week.

Emmett almost wanted the answer to be no just because it would be disturbing for this island to get any better. Almost.

"Um, as nice of an idea as that is, it's just not likely to happen," Dan said reluctantly. "I mean, someone's going to die eventually. It's sad, but inevitable. So, no. I don't think there's such thing as happily ever after. But I think it can last a damn long time."

"What's that saying? One man's trash is another man's treasure?" Emma asked lazily. "If we go by that logic, then one person's happy ending would make someone else miserable. You can't make everyone happy all of the time, life just doesn't work that way."

Considering her arctic temperature experience, Fiona was probably best being around. Even if the idea of being a teaching assistant for this class was something best screeched out in an older dialect of German.
