DADA for Muggles [Wednesday, January 13]

Today's classroom was set up as a farmer's market. Under the enchanted sky (today a dull, cloudy grey, as Sirius was a bit homesick for the winters at home), students would find various bins full of produce--potatoes, and cabbages--as well as some more unusual objects, like logs and sticks.

"Today we deal with enemies who prefer to hide in plain sight," Sirius began when the class had finally assembled. "Since this is your first practical exercise in this class, we're starting you off small. Each of these bins contains completely ordinary objects, as well as the magical creatures who resemble them. None of them are particularly dangerous, as these things go, but they will take a chance to nip at your fingers, so wear the gloves if you'd like."

"These creatures," Remus continued, "all might hail from our world, but they employ camouflage such as what's found in the Muggle world. Many animals have markings that resemble their habitat, so as to hunt their prey or escape their predators. In the case of these creatures, they disguise themselves so as to lure unsuspecting people into touching them. Today, we'd like for you to differentiate dugbogs from logs, bowtruckles from sticks, gnomes from potatoes and Chinese Chomping Cabbages from...cabbages." He flicked his wand, and a stack of parchment floated from desk to desk, depositing a description of creatures at each.

While listening to the lecture, Jonas went with the dragonhide gloves. His reasoning being that, despite the given descriptions, he'd be the one to get bitten harder than most because recognition was not going to be his strong point.

Yeaaah, Chuck wasn't stupid. Gloves for him (well, mittens actually), because he would end up getting bitten otherwise. It was just the way things worked.

Jonas kept his hands behind his back while peering into the water. When he realized this put his face closer to the dugbogs, he pulled back slightly and continued looking.

Eventually, he did notice some fins and reached to poke what he thought was the dugbog. It did try and nip but Jonas was prepared and pulled his finger back quick enough.

Hey, he'd found that one. Maybe his fingers would be spared some pain.

Jonas easily missed the bowtruckles when he was sifting through the pile of sticks. The first one caught him on this thumb and the second got his palm. Jonas snapped his hand back, shaking it and glaring. He'd found the bowtruckles. Or, well, the bowtruckles had found him.

This time, Jonas got lucky and managed to catch a gnome mid movement. The legs were small and the gnome stopped moving quickly but Jonas grinned and pointed at it.

He wasn't going to get his fingers near it though. Still smarting from the bowtruckle.

Yeah, Jonas got bitten quickly here. The Chinese Chomping Cabbage got his middle two fingers and wouldn't let go for a few moments. Managing to wrangle his abused fingers away, Jonas winced and was really thankful he'd gone for the gloves.

He took a moment to peer at the cabbage and make a face. Never expected to see food with teeth of their own ever and now he was and it was...strange.

Jack chose the strongest pair of dragonhide gloves he could find. He wasn't taking extra chances.

Even with cabbages.

Jack kept his hands behind his back as he watched the water for any motion. When he finally saw what he thought was a fin, he poked a gloved finger into the water and was rewarded with the shock of motion under his hand as the dugbog dodged away.

Helen chose the striped ones because she thought they had character. And because she figured she could make her right hand as invulnerable as she needed it to be

Helen had no trouble finding the dugbogs. It was simple enough to call them to her and watch them bob towards her to see what she wished before she sent them on their way again.
