Magic for Dummies | Period One | Class One

Paige decided that the Elders hated her for arranging for her to teach first period. She had a cup of coffee in hand as her students filed in and there was an urn of coffee set up on a desk right inside the door if anyone else needed it.

After everyone had arrived, she moved to the front of the room and smiled at them.

"Good morning. I'm Paige Matthews and this is Magic for Dummies. Which is not to say that I think any of you are dumb, by the way. It's just a riff on that book series."

Focus, Paige.

"Anyway, there are copies of the syllabus for all of you. If there's something you want to cover that isn't on there, let me know and I'll add it."

She handed out the sheets, took a sip of her coffee and leaned against the edge of the desk.

"Okay, so what is magic? It's not parlor tricks or sleight-of-hand. It's not top hats and rabbits. Magic is a powerful tool and is most often associated with the elements. My home in San Francisco sits on top of a spiritual nexus which is equidistant from natural sources of the five elements: earth, fire, wind, water and metal. That makes it a powerfully magical place. My family has controlled that location for a hundred years in order to keep evil from drawing on the nexus."

Paige paused and realized she was getting a bit ahead of herself.

"Oh, yeah, I'm a witch. And also a guardian angel. I have two sisters that some of you may know of because alternate universe versions of them went to school here - Piper and Phoebe Halliwell. Anyway, the three of us are a powerful force of good magic. But enough about me. Today I want to learn about you. I know you're probably all tired of this, but I'd like you to give me your name, what, if any, personal experience you have with magic and why you're taking this class."

Raven was paying attention and taking notes, of course. And glad that the "for Dummies" was a joke, because she didn't want to be a dummy.

Name, personal experience with magic and why you are taking this class!

"Gwynn Hood... and I've been experiencing stuff here for four years." Probably best not to tell the witch that someone back home wanted to burn her for being a witch. "I figured that learning more about the weirdness is always the best approach."

"Knowledge is power," Paige agreed. "Did you know anything about magic before coming here?"

"My name is Raven," Raven introduced herself. "I am primarily an empath and a healer, but I have some small skill with sorcery. I am taking this class in hopes of learning more about my powers and magic in general. And I have met one of your sisters: Phoebe."

"An empath and a healer? That's probably a useful combination," Paige said. "Have you always known about your powers?"

Raven nodded. "I was born with them," she said. "And my training began as soon as I was able to understand."

"My name is Harper Finkle and I never believed in magic until I came to Fandom," she said. "And to be honest, I'm taking this class because I couldn't get into the other classes I wanted. Still, I think getting a background in magic could be very helpful, considering all the strange stuff I've had to deal with in Fandom."

"What kind of strange things have you dealt with so far?" Paige asked.

"For starters, there's the time I turned into a boy. Oh, and I can't forget the time I got attacked by harpies, though the mutant alligators were really worse than the harpies," said Harper.

I believe I might have been placed in this class accidentally, but I'd like to stay. I come from a place where magic is forbidden, and I don't think that's right. I'd like to be able to learn more while I'm here, while I still can."
