History of Medicine - Second Period - Wednesday, 1/06

Professor Chevalier welcomed them into the Danger Shop with a rather normal classroom setting and a smile. One might wonder why he used the Danger Shop, since he wasn't doing anything particularly special this time around, but one need only look at the sunlight streaming into the fake room and the smile on his face to put two and two together.

Once everyone was seated, he started passing around a copy of the syllabus.

"Welcome, all of you, to the history of medicine. I'm not sure what you all expected of this class, but we'll be covering some of the more ancient beliefs, the origin of practices, as opposed to more... modern milestones. I certainly hope this isn't a problem."

When he was done, he returned to the front of the class and leaned back against his desk.

"Now, since this is the first class, we'll mostly be doing introductions and I will be looking for an assistant or two, if anyone is interested. But first," and he pointed to the closest person, "name, class, and either something interesting or why you decided to take the class."

Claire was actually ready to take notes in this class. She was kind of hoping they might learn something that would give her a clue about how her ability worked.

"My name is Professor Chevalier," he offered with a little bow of his head, "and I have been a medical professional, though not for some years."

You know, since the Civil War? Acting Red Cross in Vietnam doesn't really count.

"But cures and medicines have interested me for many years, especially the more ancient roots."

Like the ones that would possibly cure vampirism.

"I'm Savannah Levine, a Senior, and I'm taking this class because the roots of medicine through history has always interested me." She shrugged. "Besides, I had your other class last term and liked it."

Nick gave her a smile, glad to have a familiar face. It meant he was doing a decent job here. Maybe this would be a good place for him.

"Alex Karev. Junior." Alex was really regretting not making a note card for these things now. "And I'm here because someone from my future told me I end up a surgeon. I don't know a damn thing about medicine so I thought I'd check this class out."

Claire gave him a puzzled look. "You? A surgeon? Really?"

She liked Alex and all, but he did not strike her as the warm bedside manner type.

"Someone from your future," he said thoughtfully.

"Well, we'll cover some of that in the class. Surgery, and it's origins."

"I'm Claire Bennet," she said. "I'm a junior and I decided to take this class because I'm interested in learning more about how the body works and how medicine adapts for that."

He smiled, but he also looked a little amused.

"Well, we'll also be covering a lot of how the body doesn't work. Much of ancient medicine is based on mysticism. But hopefully, it will be helpful to you either way."

"My name is Spock," said Spock, "and I am a sophomore. I elected to take this course because it was the only on with 'science' in the course title." Well, at least he was honest.

Nick could appreciate that. He was a little boggled that his was the only even vaguely scientific course offered, but he supposed this place was a little different than most.

"I certainly hope you find the class interesting, then. Science is only part of it, though."

"I'm Ellie Bartowski, I'm a junior, and I am taking this class because I want to be a doctor someday," she said. "Learning about the roots of medicine will be helpful, I think."

He nodded to her.

"Thank you, Ellie, and welcome to the class."

"I'm Naomi Wildman and I'm a senior," Naomi said, "I'm taking this class because I'd like to learn more about medicine and it's history,"

"Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis, junior," Joolushko said. "I took this class to learn more of medicine on this planet." In part because she wanted to laugh at what she was sure would be ridiculous theories and practices.

"My name is Alice Liddell," she said brightly. "I'm a senior. I'm from a century or so in this world's past, and I'm curious as to how things have changed since then. That is, I know some of the modern approaches, and I know what's from my time, but I haven't seen the gaps filled in."
