This week Max was not distracted. And he was going to pretend that last week had never happened. For many, many, many reasons.

The far-too-familiar pile of gear was waiting as everyone arrived, but before anyone could grab anything, Max began speaking. "Today we're doing things a bit different. This being your final examination, you're going to execute a mission as a team. And, as with many missions of this sort, I'm going to be providing you with the parameters before you decide what to take." This also meant they'd be skipping the run today, but that was okay. Max was sure they'd get a workout without it.

Max made a small gesture and a patch of ground writhed and reshaped itself into a model of the surrounding terrain. The main features were a tall, rocky set of cliffs with an equally rocky beach below them. "We are here," he indicated a spot that was some distance from the top of the cliff. "Scouts indicate that the enemy is going to attempt to land troops here," he indicated a spot on the beach. "Your objective is to keep them from doing so by whatever means necessary. Or, failing that, to keep those troops from making it off the beach. If you can at least keep them bottled up for a few hours, reinforcements are on their way to secure this area."

"Since you are all such good students I'm sure you don't have any questions about this assignment. Which is good because for the purposes of this exercise I am not here." He stepped off to the side and waved at the pile of gear.

There were cupcakes (http://justgrits.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/cupcakes.jpg) next to the gear. No one was near them, and there was no indication where they'd come from, but they were there all the same.

That comment is a lie!

Momoko was standing near the cupcakes. Momoko was staring at the cupcakes. Momoko was rather used to the island providing free food. Momoko was picking up a cupcake.

The cupcake exploded and sent even more colour onto her and her clothes.

"Ah? That was so mean! Who would do something like that to cake?! And at CHRISTMAS!" Though now she wondered if there was a way to use the cupcakes on the battlefield.

Sadly, the cupcakes couldn't answer Momoko's question. They were just sweet little innocent cupcakes, and wouldn't she like to pick up another one, to see if it would happen again...?

The terrain isn't any harder than the stuff Max has been making everyone run all semester, so you can probably keep talking during this part too.

There's surprisingly decent tree cover until about thirty feet from the edge of the cliff.

It's a rocky area, but there's nothing big enough to hide a person behind. Two wooden boats that look to be carrying about twenty men each are coming in. It's not clear what's driving them: not oars, not a motor, but at their current rate of approach it'll only take them ten minutes to land.

Who have been very good little minions. No trouble at all.

Anemone was there, and was totally a good little minion who was absolutely no trouble.

Ino was there and she was a good girl and anyone who didn't think so was obviously a foul liar and needed to have her dad beat sense into them.

And tell him how much you'll miss his class.

Oh, look, an Anakin loitering after the class was over. Lucky, lucky Max.

At least he wasn't bringing Raven and Karla's cookies to share?

Max shot Anakin a friendly grin and nodded in greeting. But halfway through the gesture it slowed considerably. Something was... off. The little part of Max's brain that was dedicated to keeping him alive by not pissing off people who it was a bad idea to piss off was clambering for attention.

Anakin crossed his arms over his chest and glowered. "Hitting on any students lately?"

There were extra special shiny (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3251/3132701231_e4ceba8246.jpg) cupcakes left for the Centurion, again, with no cupcake fairy in sight.

Max eyed said cupcakes suspiciously. This was, after all, Fandom. And then there was the possibility that they'd been provided by one of his students, which would make them even more dangerous.

Except... well, Momoko would probably be safe... Maybe they were from Momoko... Hmmm....

They were perfectly nice, sparkly cupcakes! Wouldn't he like to pick one up and try it? There couldn't be any harm in just holding it while he checked for tampering...
