Applied Science, 12/14, Period 1

There was a platter of Christmas cookies with coffee, hot chocolate, and milk on the side on a table at the back of the lab. The lab tables were covered with less savory supplies.

"Welcome to your final," Tyler said. "I am sure those of you who have taken a class with me before will be astounded to hear that our last lab is making soap. Technically" -- he grinned -- "we are creating the alkali salt of a fatty acid." He went through a thumbnail lecture on the science of that. "If you've done it before, try to do it better, or add scents or herbs this time."

"Before you start on the soap process, please write 150 words or so on what you learned from this class. Thanks. You guys were a good group."

"Grandparent types are the people who don't discipline you who are cooler than your parents," Dinah decided. "So, you know, that works. They're not the ones enforcing our curfews and all." She grinned. "I still need to meet them! Maybe this semester, if there's a good weekend to go to Santa Cruz?"

"Hell yeah. I know Trucker wants to come to graduation, but you definitely need to get the chance to see the town. It's awesome."

"Cool!" Dinah grinned and carefully added some food coloring to the soap to make it purple. "We can hang out at the beach, only fair, you got to see Gotham's boardwalk. Do you think your mom would mind, or is she loosening up?"

[And I flee for a couple hours!]

Priestly shrugged. "She seemed to like you well enough on Parents' Weekend. She probably thinks you're a good influence on me."
