Applied Science, 12/14, Period 1

There was a platter of Christmas cookies with coffee, hot chocolate, and milk on the side on a table at the back of the lab. The lab tables were covered with less savory supplies.

"Welcome to your final," Tyler said. "I am sure those of you who have taken a class with me before will be astounded to hear that our last lab is making soap. Technically" -- he grinned -- "we are creating the alkali salt of a fatty acid." He went through a thumbnail lecture on the science of that. "If you've done it before, try to do it better, or add scents or herbs this time."

"Before you start on the soap process, please write 150 words or so on what you learned from this class. Thanks. You guys were a good group."

He's definitely there, though he's foregone the cookies and is just downing coffee.

Dinah stopped by on her way out for one last good-bye and thank-you. "Hey, Tyler. I really enjoyed this class. Especially when we got to blow stuff up!"

"Thanks," Tyler said. "I'd offer you another class on blowing things up, but that has to wait for summer."

"Ooo? Maybe I'll stick around for part of this summer then," Dinah said, amused. "What are you teaching next semester?"

"If the form goes through, philosophy," Tyler told her. "If it doesn't, I'll find something to do with science that keeps me awake."

"Ooo, cool." Dinah hadn't expected that one. "I might sign up for that. My last semester, gotta make sure the transcripts for college look a *little* normal, at least."

"Science is normal!" Tyler feigned hurt. "Where are you applying?"

Dinah gave him a grin for that, then said a little less certainly, "New Gotham University, at my hometown. New Jersey State. Columbia, although I figure that's a long shot. SUNY, too. And Metropolis State and University of Chicago. One of those has to let me in, right?"

"That's generally how it goes, yeah," Tyler said. "Good luck."

Dinah regained her grin. "Thanks. And see you next semester!"
