Anyone Can Cook, 12/08, Period 4
An elaborate rolled cake decorated like a log with wee meringue mushrooms and icing leaves decorating it sat on Colette's demonstration table at the front of class.
"Hello," she greeted the students, once she was certain everyone was in their seats. She was a little tanner than normal; she'd spent the weekend hunting for treasure in a rain forest (with much bigger boobs), and was trying to forget all about it.
"This is our last class before the final, and we are going to make a traditional Christmas dessert called a Bûche de Noël. It is a sponge cake, rolled with a buttercream frosting, and covered on the outside with a chocolate icing. The cake can be chocolate or yellow, with vanilla or chocolate icing on the inside, though the outside is always chocolate. As you can see, it is then decorated to look like a log. It is not very difficult to produce, and it seems quite impressive."
"The myth behind the creation of this cake is that Emperor Napoleon I made households in Paris keep their chimneys closed during the winter, based on the notion that cold air caused medical problems. This prevented Parisians from being able to use their fireplaces, so they could not celebrate Christmas with the hearth as they usually did. French bakers were clever, though! They invented this dessert as a symbolic replacement around which the family could gather to enjoy the holiday."
"We do not have time to bake the cakes today, but I am passing out a recipe, and you each have your own cake and icing, powdered sugar, and other things to decorate it with. Bring them home to share with your loved ones."
