This week you are going to work on a speech of invitataion. Your audience is your parent or guardian who will be coming for you next weekend. I'd like you to use Ethose, Pathos, and Logos to convince them everything is all right, you are prefectly safe, you are learning and becoming a productive member of society, and there is absolutely no drama going on in this school. [By the time she finishes saying this, she's laughing--her hand over her mouth]

301--Parents and Guardians

OK gang, we've been discussing influence and trust and power and all that shi--stuff. Now we need to talk about communication. How does one speak to their parent or guardian? What information do you give freely, and what do you hide? How does your body language speak for you? How does it differ from peer group relationships? Is there any difference between a "chosen" parent figure and a blood related parent? Let's dig deep, kids. Go.

Can we choose which parent we perform this exercise on as my rhetoric will be very different if it's for my father versus my mother.

[Smiles broadly] Lee, I knew you'd do well in this class. Yes...choose who you are addressing to help you determine audience appeal. Good question.

*Parker is looking uncomfortable with this whole exercise*

Adama? Can I practice this on you? If you promise not to laugh?

"I promise," Lee says faithfully.

Fabulous. Thanks. I mean, I already asked my dad to come, he's already agreed, but... I don't want to use that letter here in class. It's too personal.

*scribbles for a while*

Dear Dad,

As you know, Parents' Weekend is coming up a week from now. I hope you'll be able to attend.

I should probably still leave out the part about the zombies.

Lee laughs. "Yes, the zombies and maybe about whatever happened to you on Homecoming. Be sure to mention that you have great friends." He gives her a winning smile.

*sticks out her tongue at him, then grins*

"God, yes. No way am I mentioning Homecoming. And *nobody* better mention Rob Gordon to him. Poor bastard." She rolls her eyes. "If I said 'friends', he'd ask me what companies your parents manage, and if you'll be able to help me manage the multi-conglomerate when I inherit it. So I guess, hello, logos, knowing your audience." She taps her pen on the paper, trying to think of how to phrase 'I'm having fun and no one's tried to kill me lately.'

"What've you got?"

Lee smiles snidely and looks at his paper.

"To: Commander William Harold Adama, Battlestar Galactica
From: Lee William Adama, Civilian

I'm to cordially invite you to Parent's Weekend here on the Thirteenth Colony, Earth, on October 28-30, Earth time. Lodging will be made available for you in town. I would appreciate a visit if it is at all possible, sir."

Lee sighs.

"Wow. Overwhelming pathos there, Adama." Parker shakes her head, looking at his letter. "Although, if that's the kind of thing your dad responds to...."

She grins, and rewrites hers.

TO: Charles Parker, CEO, The Centre, Blue Cove, Delaware
FROM: M. Parker, future CEO, the Centre; currently at Fandom High

Mr. Parker:

You are cordially invited to attend meetings with the administrators and teachers at Fandom High, re: your daughter's 4.0 standing, and her future plans as a Captain of Industry. Lodging will be made available for you in town. A visit at your convenience would yield exciting business opportunities in meeting the parents of other students.

I remain your, etc., etc.

"Lacks pathos, but hey, can't say he won't read it."

"That looks perfect, Parker," he says and grins deviously.

Parker chortles. "It really, really does." She shrugs. "So. How would you write it if the letter was to your mom?"

Lee laughs and writes:

"Hey mom. Parent's weekend on Oct 28-30 Earth Time. Bring Zak. Love you. -L"

"Perfect. Short but sweet."

Parker looks at hers, thinking, and then re-writes:

Sydney--

My teachers want to meet you and ask you if I was always like this. You should probably come and tell them it's not your fault. Tell the lab rats they're lucky they're not here. Oct 28-30, and leave the Sweeper Team at home.

Your momo doesn't call you by your ellusive first name?

"Mom?" Parker blinks at him for a second, then gets it. "Oh, Sydney's not my mom. He's -- uh, I guess he's kind of an honorary uncle. He was ... close, with my mother." She shrugs, tracing her signature without looking at Lee. "And he calls me Parker because he respects that that's what I want to be called."

Lee feels awkward and just nods and doesn't ask questions. "So... I think we did pretty good on the assignment."

"Wanna get a cup of coffee, Parker?"

Parker is utterly relieved he doesn't ask. "Cocoa. Still trying to cut back on the caffiene." She smiles suddenly, a sun-burst of glee. "If I make it 'til midnight without smoking? Crichton owes me twenty bucks."

"Ah, John. That sounds like him. Shall we?" He offers his arm in a gentleman-like manner.

She grins at him, because it's impossible not to respond to Lee when he's being proper. "Let's shall."
