Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #12

At the back of the room today, there were mats set up, and the desks had all been rearranged in order to make room for them, but Aeryn wasn't addressing them just yet. "This week I had planned to give some tips on the larger scale invasions," she began when class had settled. "Frankly I know that there's one more day of classes this week and there is nothing I can do within the boundaries of the law that will make you all pay attention to something this important." Yeah, military background. The fact that she had to play nicer than that did drive her crazy sometimes. "Instead we'll talk more about this next week, and I'll take a moment to explain to you Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving is Thursday, it's the reason you get the day off, and it's meant to be just that, a day of thanks. Because cycles and cycles ago, people sailed to this country on a boat, and were ill-prepared and would have died horribly if it hadn't been for the assistance of indigenous people. From what I understand, later the colonists went about killing the indigenous people and stealing their land for themselves, which is more or less to be expected in the invasion of a country." Bet you never heard the settlement of America described that way before. "The unexpected part is that they went about putting together a holiday in order to make it all okay. Now people get together with their families as an excuse to eat far too much, which I think is also the reason people originally also get Friday off, because they are not yet able to move by then.

"Thanksgiving is also the start to the holiday season, traditionally, though I've noticed in recent times this seems to actually start more around August. There's Thanksgiving, Christmas, which we will be discussing soon-" And would they. "-and New Year's, and in preparation for Christmas, Friday is also the biggest shopping day of the year. This is absolute torture if you are unlucky enough to work retail. Sales begin before any sane hour of the morning, people line up waiting to get into stores and then attempt to trample each other, and there really is no better way to bridge Thanksgiving with a holiday about goodwill towards men than flattening a person to get the last doll that they could have bought online three months ago. If you're going out to participate in the insanity, just be careful.

"Now," she said, finally walking to the back of the room. "Today we're going to combine the lessons on invasions and Black Friday. I want you all to find a partner and grab a jousting stick. They're padded, you won't hurt each other, but it will give you a chance to brush up on your hitting and defensive skills, because whether things are trying to kill you or you're going to the sales, it really might come in handy either way."

Raven was in the hanging out corner. She'd made the choice to learn to defend herself, but she definitely wasn't even remotely ready for hitting someone with a weapon, padded or not. Besides, she had a baby to care for!

Chuck wasn't so certain about the fighting side of this... but he could swing a stick around and pretend he was a ninja jouster. Plenty of practice in that, and he could take a bit more, no trouble.

Oh, and if someone wanted to partner him, he could probably work around that.

Still staring at the padded stick. Just moved on from actively not padding herself.

This was... ridiculous. Beka forewent the padding, but she picked up a stick. She wouldn't mind the fighting part at all.
