World Wars in the Media, Tuesday

"I know last week's film was a little heavy," Mitchell began, pointedly not looking in Kate's direction (although if it was PMT, he could hazard the guess it would be over by now, thankfully), "So I thought it was time to compensate a bit. Don't worry, we'll get to the fat man next week," and his mouth split into a slight grin, "But there's something I've got to share with you."

"Now reserve your judgement," he said, skidding towards the projector, "I know he isn't anywhere near as good as Laurel and Hardy, but give mr. Chaplin the benefit of the doubt."

He hit play, pointed nimbly at the couches (which had made their happy reappearance) and said, "As your teacher, I'm telling you now that none of you are allowed to do any kind of work in this class this week. If you do, I'd better not find out."

With that, he turned off the lights.

Get yourself situated in the couches. Have some tea, or overly sugary treats. Seriously, he wants you to get diabetes.

Couches! Couches were good. Especially when you wanted to sink a little further down in your seat, wondering how it was even possible that you could actually tell that someone was specifically not looking at you.

As far as Kate was concerned, most of last week deserved to be forgotten.

Yeah. Uh. That not working edict of his?

Not happening.

Ino curled up on a couch, pulled out a notebook, and promptly began scribbling away, totally ignoring the movie.

Jaina had flown under the radar while doing work during Anakin's post-AU kids sex lecture. She was pretty sure she could get away with doing work here, making sure she was sitting comfortably where no one could see her datapad.

Tea and a cigarette. Was there anything better in life that could be done while fully clothed? Jenny thought not.

The Great Dictator with Charlie Chaplin, ladies and gentlemen. Don't do actual work. It'll make Mitchell frown.

When she pings in!

Dinah was loving the silliness. And pretty much trying to get diabetes, yes.

Who's enjoying himself, yes.

Mitchell, meet Kate's slightly sheepish 'so, maybe I was an idiot and maybe I messed up' expression.

Oh, and a box of chocolate chip muffins, which she was handing over to him without a word.

Mitchell took the muffins in silence, eying her for-- well, any visible signs of-- uh, that remaining.

... not that women on the-- were frightening, or anything. Nope. "Hey."

Mitchell was such a brave man. Really.

"Hey." Pause. "The vegetables may have kinda made me snap last week."

Mitchell had over a hundred years' experience dealing with emotional women trying to hit him with kitchen appliances, and he hadn't even met Annie yet.

"Kind of," Mitchell agreed. "You told me to fuck off."

Mitchell, you are a teacher. Teach. Er.

"Yeeeah, um, sorry about that." There she went with the guilty sheepish look again. "I probably should've just stayed in my room that day."

"Probably," he agreed, putting up the lid of the box to check what was in it. "So this is your offering?"

"Uh huh. And also," she said, pushing her carefully arranged bangs aside to show him the cut – already well in the process of healing – above her right eye. "The world's punished me for my wrongdoings."

He dropped the lid and eyed her forehead. Which... still smelled like blood.

Mitchell did his best to ignore the sudden thumping in his head. "Must've been a lot of wrongdoing."

"Maybe being 16 is a crime in itself," Kate replied and let the bangs fall back into place. She shrugged. "Or maybe the world just wanted to remind me that leaving Fandom doesn't mean I won't get hurt.

"Yeah, there's..." He pulled a cupcake out of the box, taking a bite to distract himself. "Plenty of monsters anywhere. Nooks and crannies."

"And dangerous drivers, too," Kate supplied, giving him a curious look. Shifts in general moods didn't slip by her unnoticed.

"It just depends on what you count as monsters," he said; if his voice turned both darker and more flippant at the same time, there was a reason for it he wasn't divulging.

"Well, I don't think I'd call my..."

Her voice drifted off, for a variety of reasons. For once, not knowing what to refer to Leto as was the least important. She drew in a sharp breath, started saying something else. "Look, are yo--?" And then that got dropped too.

There was something funky going on, she knew that much. "I think I should go. Stuff to do."

His mouth twitched up into a slight smile. He bit into the cupcake again, forcibly willing the thump of her heartbeat to fade from his ears. "I accept the muffins," he said, "But this better not be followed by you turning into a cat again before class."

"If that happens, I'll bring you an entire cake," she replied. She was smirking, but it seemed just a little forced. "And I'll blame you for jinxing me. See ya, Mitchell." And so she turned to leave.

As soon as she did, he may have exhaled in gratitude, not that he'd admit to it.

The last thing he needed was to start seeing friends as snacks. Fingers shaking a little, Michell resolved to go out and light a cigarette as soon as humanely possible.

Three years I've managed without running a movie class, and today would be the day that kicked my ass. Sigh.

*Pats* *cheers on Laurel & Hardy choice*
