Anyone Can Cook, Tuesday, Period 4

Colette was hungry as the students arrived today, which might explain why she kept looking longingly at the bowls of crepe fillings.

"Bonjour," she said. "I saw a few of you at the Boards Benefit in the park Saturday; I hope you all enjoyed sampling the cuisine of the island. I thought the Thai food was surprisingly good -- and of course the sandwiches prepared by Monsieur Priestly." He got a smile, there.

"Today, we need to plan the Thanksgiving menu so we can give a shopping list to the student counsel. I looked at the preferences of those of you who expressed them, and I hope I was able to put everyone into a category that they will find enjoyable." She glanced down at a list as she read. "Chuck and Kyle, you will make the appetizers. Emma and Jean, please prepare a vegetable side dish or two. Layla and Sam are on the starchy side dishes. Joan, Liir and Kate can make salads. Helen and George Sands are our bakers, and Priestly and Sookie will be in charge of dessert. Priestly, I have one other thing I wanted to ask you about."

"I thought we could spend some time discussing what dishes we might make. I've found a few sample Thanksgiving menus. I'd like for each group to tell me what you plan to make by the end of class."

"Once you have come to a decision, you may make and fill crepes as a treat." She quickly demonstrated a crepes recipe, breaking eggs and whipping them with flour before browning it on a griddle, filling her sample with sliced bananas and a dollop of Nutella. "We have fruits, chocolate, ham, cheese ... you can put almost anything in a crepe and it will taste magnifique."

"Okay, so we totally need at least, like, four types of pie."

Priestly was a fan of pie, clearly.

"Naturally," Sookie agreed, nodding vehemently. "At home, we always do pumpkin and pecan, but I'm willing to budge on one of those. Not both, though. I mean, come on, it's not Thanksgiving without pie."

"Pumpkin's totally mandatory," Priestly agreed. "Pecan sounds good, or maybe rhubarb? Some of these pumpkin parfait things and stuff in the samples sound good, too."

"Oooh, rhubarb's good, but tricky. Which doesn't mean we shouldn't do it," Sookie declared happily, looking through the samples. "And the parfait sounds good for those who're watchin' their figures, you know? Not that I particularly think Thanksgiving's the time to do it but who am I to tell people what to do."

"Plus, sometimes you spend all night going heavy heavy heavy on the food, and you just want something lighter and . . . less rich for dessert. Or both."

"These parfait might make the difference in whether people go into food comas or not," Sookie agreed with a grin.

"Variety saves lives," Priestly said firmly.

"Okay, well speaking of variety," she said, starting to write down a little list, "we should probably branch out from pumpkin, too. Rhubarb's good -- how do we feel about chocolate? Um, not together."

"Most people seem to find it generally acceptable," Priestly noted. "We could do a cheesecake or something? Or the ever traditional chocolate chip cookies."
