"Apologies for the lack of meeting last week. I was called away." He fell down a well. It was embarrassing. "This week we're starting with actual blades. I know some of you have used them before. Please use that experience to be extra careful with the more inexperienced members of the group. I have a range of swords available for you to choose from. Zayne, your weapon of choice isn't exactly practical for this session so I've prepared something more suitable but a step up from the wood. Azula, I promised you an Arming sword lesson. The sword on the end is yours.

Pair up. Take your time, respect your opponent and if you're hurt, alert either myself or Captain Algren immediately. The point of sparring with live weapons isn't to hurt your opponent, it's to practice movements and control."

"I'm still getting used to my own growth spurt from last year, so I understand. Focus on your footwork first. You'll find your upper body will be easier to manage once your feet know what they're doing."

Lion-o nodded. "And if my feet know what they're doing, then all I need to worry about are my arms. And the sword, of course."

"Precisely. The sword follows your arms and your arms follow your feet. Eventually, they all know what they're doing and you can run through moves and counter attacks without actively thinking about it."

"And without needed a magical sword that does the work for you," added Lion-o. "Not that magic doesn't help in a pinch."

Edmund was not a terribly big fan of magic, but he had at least learned that not all magic was awful either. That was how he was able to keep a straight face and nod thoughtfully. "When you say it does the work for you, do you mean it tends to compensate, to lead you rather than you leading it?"

"In the few fights I've been in, the Sword of Omens definitely guided me," explained Lion-o. "But when I was fighting the zombies, it also gave me a forcefield so that they couldn't get at me. Of course, the forcefield didn't last forever and I actually had to fight off the last few zombies."

He frowned slightly in concentration. "So it protects you," he theorised. "It's good that you're training with a non-magical sword. You'll make its job easier, and you won't leave yourself with a major disadvantage if the magic ever falters."

"Hopefully that won't happen, but I've see stranger things happen," said Lion-o. "Besides, the sword wasn't really in reach when I got attacked by the vegetables last week. At least we had knives at Café Fina."

"A staff, like a broken broom or mop handle will work for defence as well in a pinch. Messy, though, for tomatoes."

Lion-o chuckled. "The tomatoes were messy no matter what. We'll have enough tomato sauce to last for months at Fina, though."

Edmund grinned. "I'll keep that in mind if I ever have a craving for pasta."
