Art 101 - Wednesday, Period Four - 11/11
Nick was smiling as he held the door open for his students to enter.
"Today, as you might have guessed from the decor, we will be covering the Baroque period."
In the warm sunlight, the colors of the ceiling, the walls, the sculpture: all of it was bright and almost overwhelming.
"And by stepping in, you've learned one thing about this period and that was that they enjoyed... ostentation. Flair. Bright colors, detailed art, and no space untouched."
Closing the door behind them, he continued.
"Started around 1600, the Church could be said to be behind a great deal of the movement as there was a demand that the art start speaking to the illiterate, telling stories instead of just illustrating them. This more populist art took some of the wit of the previous period and added a visceral quality that spoke directly to the heart, to the more... primal portions of the mind."
His hand lingered on a particularly beautiful image of a saint bowed in prayer as angels surrounded her. It amazed him that this place, this strange room, gave him so much. Whether his ability to deal with the religious art was a product of the Danger Room or just his own mind tricking him into thinking so, it was hard to say, but there was something aching just behind his eyes in how he touched the pieces.
"You all have probably heard of Michelangelo. He is the better known of the two greater Baroque painters. One of his better known pieces is sitting over there," and he pointed to where the massive statue sat.
"The other is Corregio. He worked primarily in paint and if you would care to see some of his work, simply look up."
He looked up himself for a moment, something constricting in his chest before he nodded blithely to the class and lead them into a side chamber filled with art supplies.
"As always."
[ocd up!]
