Anyone Can Cook | Period 4 | 11.10

Colette passed out knives as the students came into the classroom. "Bonjour. We are cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the school in two weeks; please take a moment to sign up for your preferences among what kind of dish you would like to make. If you do not sign up, I will make the selection for you and give you your assignment next week. I will make the turkeys."

American holiday or not, she wasn't trusting the main protein to amateurs.

"We were going to make yeast breads today, but I think it would be better for us to use our skills with knives to fight the vegetable menace now attacking this school." Give the woman credit -- she didn't pause as she said that. "I am going out. You will go with me, yes? If you would rather not, you may stay in the classroom and study Thanksgiving traditions."

"And now, allons-y." White coat on, she was ready for battle.

Right, was there a reason they were going out to fight insane mutant vegetables from Mars or whatever?

Considering that they had no brain, not that Emma could tell, and her fencing sword wasn't here, Emma was going to read a fashion magazine, thank you. She couldn't brain-zap them, and she'd just get in the way of those who had a talent for brute force.

Besides, this magazine totally counted as reading about Thanksgiving. Getting the right setting - clothing included - was an important part of any holiday.

Helen had brought in a bunch of sliced up squash from her eaerly encounter. Now she shifted her arm once more into a long knife as she preferred that to the ones offered by the teacher.

Colette stared as she watched the arm shift. If anything, she was jealous.

"That does not hurt?"

Helen looked up at her, a bit startled. "What?"

She looked down at her arm. "Oh. No. I can make it into whatever I want."

"Oh." At a different time, Colette would have had many more questions, but just then -- "Then watch for the onions, and don't hurt yourself."

Helen nodded. "I shall be careful. And you as well."

And should Colette have questions at another time, Helen would be glad to answer.

Yeeeah, Kate was not going outside before she absolutely had to. So she would be here, pretending to read about Thanksgiving.

Please pick your first two choices from:

1. Appetizer or canapé
2. Side dish (vegetable)
3. Side dish (starch)
4. Salad
5. Bread
6. Dessert

You don't need to know what you'll make, just the category -- we'll work on planning the exact menu next week. If everyone picks the same things, this may be RNG'd at Colette's whim.

Emma very quickly wrote her name down under salad and vegetable side dish. Those things required chopping, and that was something she could manage.

She would not be held responsible if the dessert came out like rocks.

Chuck took advantage of salad and appetizer. He figured the salad would be easy to make and that since the appetizer was first people would end up forgetting about how bad it tasted by dessert.

Helen signed up for bread and dessert.

Priestly went with dessert and salad.

Sookie immediately signed up for a starchy side dish and a dessert. She was Southern -- girl knew her pies and starchy sides.

Kyle signed up for the appetizer and vegetable side dish.

You are chefs. You will prevail.

Helen and her knife arm were prepared to fight.

Priestly already had tomato juice in his hair from doing a bit of battle that morning while trying to make breakfast. He also already had a little quiver of shish kabob skewers on his belt.

Oh yeah, he was so down with the battling of the veggie menace.

As she efficiently reduces a giant potato to a giant pile of hash browns.

There were more urgent things to think about, but Kate was still going to apologize for last week.

"Chef Tatou? I'm sorry I missed last week's class. Is there anything I have to do to make up for it?"

Colette looked a little harried as she turned to face Kate. It wasn't Kate's fault; she was just keeping one eye on the broccoli lobbing itself at her classroom windows. "Not a problem. Make a batch of muffins and bring me one, we will call it good."

If there was one thing Kate was good at, it was bringing muffins to teachers, so regardless of the vegetables, she managed a fairly bright smile as she nodded. "Okay, I can do that. Thank you."

"Pas de problem," Colette said briefly, not really noticing she was just repeating herself. "I look forward to the muffin."

"I won't disappoint you." And then Kate went back to reading about Thanksgiving. Or pretending to read while keeping an eye on the windows in case the vegetables got through. Same thing, really.

Sam won't be in class today due to a raging case of dead boyfriend despair. It's probably best not to let him near the sharp things anyway. ;)

Awwww.

Poor Sam. Totally an excused absence, if he tells Colette next week.
