Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #10

After last week this was more than a little embarrassing, but Aeryn decided she was not about to show that to her students. "First of all, my apologies for last week's class. I had attempted to bring in a caged gremlin to show you, but ended up giving you a personal demonstration of what a gremlin bite does. This week, I just bring in a picture."

She passed out the handout, a picture of a gremlin that looked like it should have maybe been on a wanted poster. If only Aeryn knew PhotoShop. "This is a gremlin. They tend to hide most of the time, so you likely won't see them wandering around- except for the one working in the office- and are attracted to shiny things that they then try to steal. Fighting with them, or startling them, or irritating them, or having an uncovered body part within biting distance, or pretty much anything that isn't letting them have their way may get you bitten. Their bites won't kill you, or land you in the clinic, but gremlin venom does have a sort of hallucinogenic effect, making the victim believe that they are something they're not. They then often seek refuge in the most public of places, where people can see them, and possibly record them.

"While it can be embarrassing for some-" Not her, nope! "-remember that it does tend to happen to most everyone at some point or another. Strange behavior is often automatically assumed to be the effect of a gremlin bite, and it will wear off. The desire to hide under your bed for days is perfectly normal, but unnecessary. This is high school; you will do more embarrassing things than this.

"Now," Aeryn said, "I'm going to let you go early, as on my way here a sentient cucumber tried to take a bite out of my ankle, which even for this place is not exactly normal. If anyone has any experiences like this today, remember them for next week, because we will be talking about it."

Bless you, invasions on a Tuesday when Aeryn could shoot things. That would probably be overkill, right? Hmmm.

Morgana had never seen a gremlin up close, thank god, so she paid special attention to the picture of the gremlin, just in case she ever did have an encunter.

Illyria eyed the illustration of the creature and wondered if it was distantly related to the Rufu clan of demons from the dimension with no cheese.

Raven had heard of gremlins and was terrified of being bitten by one. Maybe demon blood would be unappetizing. Maybe she could heal the bite instantly. She didn't want to think about the things that might happen if she lost control.

Mat wondered if these little creatures were related to the tiny blue men who'd made off with his best pair of boots.

He was also trying to pretend like he'd seen photographs all the time. He was rather abjectly failing at the last bit.

Raven glanced over at Mat. She wasn't sure if she needed to talk to him about the incident with her powers going wild. He hadn't seemed to be acting out of the ordinary that night, but she was still worried she'd been influencing him with her powers all along.

Mat winked at her. "Have you been bit?"

"Never," Raven said, smiling back at him. "I am nervous about such a thing happening, but I have been very lucky so far. Have you?"

"No," Mat said, looking a bit relieved. "But I'm lucky, so that might be working in my favor."

For once. Generally speaking, he always ended up getting the short end of every stick.

She paused for a moment, then asked, "You did not feel strangely the night of Halloween, did you?"

"No more so than I usually do after eating too many sweets and mixing them with wine," Mat replied, cocking up an eyebrow. "Why?"

"I was having difficulties with my gifts," Raven said, ever so vaguely. "I was hoping I had not caught you with them."

Mat smiled at her. "Generally I like gifts."

"Perhaps not in this case," Raven said, biting at her lip. "You have never felt as if you were acting unusual around me, have you?" She was praying he would not say yes.

"Good," Raven said with a sigh of relief. "I am glad to hear you say that." She didn't think she had been compelling him at all, but she couldn't help but be paranoid about accidentally using her powers.

Karla was wondering if she'd be able to neutralize the gremlin venom. It was a poison, after all. And what else she could use it for.

Jon was making a mental note to talk to some people about gremlin repellent, and occasionally kicking at the squash.
