"These four men have something absolutely amazing in common. Well, actually, they have a lot of things in common, but let's see if you can figure out what the amazing thing is. All of them are white guys who became President. That's a good starting point. They're four of the five Presidents who have served at least two complete terms since Woodrow Wilson back during World War I. We're getting a little closer there. Three were Republicans but one was a Democrat, so that's way off."

"Oh, also, they were all cheerleaders." Jim paused and gave the camera a quick smile. "That's right, four of the five US Presidents who have served a complete two terms since World War One were cheerleaders in high school or college."

"Eisenhower became the head cheerleader at West Point after he hurt his knee playing three different sports. Bush was the head cheerleader in high school. Neither Reagan or Roosevelt were head cheerleaders, but they were both on their squads. And Roosevelt went to Harvard, so he was an Ivy League cheerleader, which sounds even more impressive even though I have no clue if that means anything special."

"I think the lesson here is clear: never make fun of a male cheerleader because they might run the free world someday."

"Okay, pair up and come up with a Presidential cheer. It can be about our current President, a former President, future Presidents, what it takes to become President, whatever you want. And then, yes, you have to perform them because it's not fun for everyone else unless you do."

If being on a cheerleading squad meant future world domination, Hannibal was so on the fast track to power. He'd be the best looking president ever, he decided.

Yeah, his notes consisted of the sentence: cheerleading gives way to POWER!

Tara was surprised by the coincidence, and picturing the presidents in cheerleading uniforms.

She might start trying to sketch them anytime.

Priestly managed to not actually fist pump and go "Woo!" in the middle of class, but it was a near thing.

Okay, so he kind of hated some of those presidents. But still. Go male cheerleaders!

Grab a partner and come up with a Presidential cheer, whatever that means to you.

While waiting for a partner, Hannibal scribbled down a few rhyming words to get his brain working. What rhymed with inauguration, anyway?

"May we do a verse about how you've all abandoned your historical roots and shunned your forefathers?" Alice inquired, taking a seat near Hannibal with a smile. "Something about your revolution and how sad London is, to be so rejected."

It didn't make for a cheerful rhyme, exactly.

"Either you've been thinking about this or you've just got a mind for presidential cheers," Hannibal said, snickering. "I think we could fit in a verse of something like that."

[Pfft, I ignore nothing! You just caught me when I'd fallen asleep!]

Tara sat back, hoping someone really extroverted would offer to work with her so she wouldn't have to get up.

This was beginning to become a habit. Priestly leaned over. "Just goes to show," he said. "We male cheerleaders are more powerful than we appear."

Tara was giggling when she glanced over at Priestly. "The h-hand that shakes the pom-pom rules the world?"

"You wouldn't think so, but I think that's where the evidence is taking us."

"So I should be careful what I say to you," Tara teased. "I don't want to upset a future benevolent dictator."

"Hey, play your cards right, and you could be the future benevolent dictator's Secretary of . . . something you'd wanna be secretary of."

"... like, typing secretary or setting policy secretary?" Tara had to ask. "Not that I'm sure I wanna be either one."

"I was thinking policy secretary. The other kind is an 'administrative assistant'."

Tara nodded, a little shy. "Good. I could be, uh -- policy secretary of the Interior? I like trees."

And sounding like a dork.

"Trees are awesome. You're totally my first cabinet member."

"Fantastic," Tara said, and flashed a smile. "So now I'm covered for after college."

"Which just means you get to goof off. You know, as long as you get good grades. I don't want any drama in my cabinet nominations."

"So, if I hire a nanny someday" -- yeah, because that would happen -- "I have to pay her taxes?" Tara looked slightly guilty. "Which would totally be the right thing to do anyhow."

"Especially since said Nanny would definitely have to be a legal US citizen."

You came up with your Presidential cheer. Now it's time to perform for the class.

I first heard about the cheerleader thing on Saturday. I immediately knew what today's class was going to be about. Really, could it have been anything else?
