Sex Thru The Ages, 11/03, Period 3

When the students filed into the Danger Shop for class today, they'd probably notice that the setup seemed to be a pretty far stretch away from the typical classroom setup, and it was also stunningly modern, as well. Or, at least, as modern as rows upon rows of slot machines, poker tables, and other assorted casino-related nonsense ever really got. Hyper-modern? Possibly just noisy and somewhat surreal?

"Today, we're going to press on into more modern views of sexuality," Algren stated, leaning slightly against a nearby slot machine, "starting with places on the planet where the view differs somewhat from what most people around here tend to consider the norm. Take, for example, Las Vegas."

"Sin City," Jim added, with a grin, leaning back to check out the lovely dancers that walked by, clad in feathers and sequins and very little else. There were male dancers as well, but... did you see those legs on that blond? "As some call it. In this era, it's considered a place where it's acceptable to let loose and have a little fun. Gambling is legal and prostitution, while not actually legal in cities with a population over 100,000 people, is still common enough to make people think it's legal."

"Beyond even that, Las Vegas has become known as the marriage capital of the world," Algren contributed, possibly sparing a quick glance at the dancers. There weren't even many feathers there, were there? Huh. "Unlike other places, which apparently require things like blood tests and a bit of a wait, marriage licences are ridiculously easy to obtain in Vegas. If you have sixty dollars in cash and some valid ID, or at least some very convincing ID, you too could be licenced to wed within minutes."

The dry note in Algren's voice possibly suggested how impressed he was with the prospect of marrying off people who had likely been doing plenty of gambling and drinking, within minutes. He was now flipping through the notes to see just how much divorces and annulments cost, nowadays. And if they were similarly easy to obtain in Vegas.

"So, we'll be asking that you all have some fun, take in the sights--" Jim started, and then was promptly distracted. Hello, cocktail waitress...

Algren sighed, but rolled his eyes tolerantly. If Jim was distracted by the cocktail waitress, then there was a possibility that he could get through the lecture without wanting to hide under a roulette table.

"Have some fun, take in the sights, and try to figure out for yourself exactly what it is about Las Vegas that sets it apart from the rest so completely. Do, please, try to remember that we are still in the classroom. Even if what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas, you're going to have to use some discretion, here." A pause. And then a wry smirk crept over his lips. "And do be sure to watch out for bees."

There weren't any bees.

[OCD on the way up! And wow, no NWS warnings today. What is the world coming to?]

This class just kept getting better and better. He'd never been to Vegas before and while this wasn't the real Vegas, it was just as good. And he was getting to do it in class.

Yeah, this class was a good choice.

So this would be this dimension's equivalent of Rhiminee's Street of Lights, Seregil surmised, looking around with a discerning eye. He may have to see about checking out the real place during one of his class breaks.

Considering the outfit she'd had to wear in her previous class, this class was actually a delightful change of pace.

Alex was just going to stay away from anything having to do with marriage. He didn't need that trauma, fake or not. Instead, he was going to find a blackjack table and get settled there.

He could gamble and check out all the pretty people. He was a good multi-tasker.

The drunken marriage thing? Yeah, Angela had been there, done that, and felt no particular need to repeat the experience. She'd leave that to someone else and just find an appropriate looking drink and loiter to watch the semi-dressed people wandering around.

Taken she may be, but there was still nothing wrong with looking.

Stupid holograms. Emma couldn't use her powers to cheat against a computerized opponent.

So instead she circled the floor, mingling, and looking for tables where her classmates were playing.

Helen wandered about checking out the sites. This was very odd.

Karla was watching a poker game with growing confusions. "Why aren't they taking their clothes off?" she asked aloud. "I thought that was part of the rules."

A very important part. The stripping had been mentioned at least four or five times when they'd been explaining the game at her last party.

Leda had been about to ask something, but she had to stop and silently giggle for a moment. "There's lots of different types of poker." she said finally. "There's different rules for each one."

"It's a card game from home, with all sorts of disks and stones and a board to play on. The coven and I have come up with ten variations so far and I think I'm figuring out an eleventh," Karla said, avidly watching the poker game.

"This is a variation I never learned," she mused. "Not even counting the part where they're keeping their clothes on."

"I think in Vegas they mostly play for money. Some of them, quite a lot of money." She'd played for all sorts of things, even removing of clothes. But mostly food, chores, trading stock, that sort of thing.

Well and truly distracted from her question of whether or not Karla would marry her, Leda now tried to think of the variations of Poker. "Something card stud," she muttered. "Texas hold-em..." She'd come up with more I'm sure, but Mun doesn't know poker.

At the end of class, Karla came up to Algren and handed him a multipage essay on Halloween costumes. It started with a brief introduction about how the tradition of costumes got started and then moved into exploring reasons people would choose to dress up in either very sexy, very silly or very stupid costumes. True to her word, she didn't ask if anyone had been dropped on their head, but the tone of 'and some people are just congenitally defective' came through in certain sections.

In all, it was a very thorough essay. Either Karla had been feeling really guilty about yelling or she'd found the essay an excellent way to avoid thinking about other things.

Considering the occasional hostile look she'd shot Kirk's way during class, it was likely the latter.

"I..." am sure they will came perilously close to lying while hope so, too came perilously close to rude. "...look forward to seeing so," she settled as a compromise.

She turned to head for the door then turned back. "Bees?"

Yes, it was all holograms, but that didn't mean Jim would have to stay still and not enjoy the view.

Oh, Vegas. Fun no matter the era.
