Sex Thru The Ages, 10/27, Period 3

"As most of you know, Halloween is this weekend and we thought we would take a break and discuss the early 21st century's attitude on costuming for the holiday," Jim said, relaxed as could be with the topic. "Right, Nathan?"

Algren's reply was something not unlike a groan. He was fairly certain that he already had some vague notion as to where this was leading. And yet, still he soldiered bravely onward.

"In the past, Halloween costumes were worn in an effort to frighten away evil spirits. People would dress as things more terrifying than the ghosts that they believed surfaced on that night. The spiritual aspect of the holiday has long, long since faded, but people continue to dress up. Putting on a different outfit might let you step into the shoes of something that you're not, if only in your head. You might be a student today, but perhaps one night of the year, you can be a superhero, or a monster."

He turned his gaze back toward Jim and gestured for him to continue. Might as well get on with it, then.

"Of course, now it's taken on a new meaning with women. It's a night of sexual liberation in the form of costume where they don't need to worry about anyone judging them." And they looked hot.

So, win-win.

"With so many wonderful costumes to chose from these days, how can someone go wrong? There's the sexy mental patient, the sexy horror movie character, the sexy firefighter, the sexy crossing guard, the sexy beefeater, the sexy female knight and--my personal favorite--the sexy captain."

Algren wasn't looking. He wasn't. No way. He was just burying his face in his hand again.

"We have a few catalogs with these costumes in them. Your assignment for the day is to go through, pick a costume that stands out to you, and explain what the draw might be in putting on something like that for one night of the year." A pause. "My theory is, somebody thinks they're actually saving money by buying so much less fabric."

"Or saving money by letting men buy you drinks at the bar." Highschoolers, Jim. They were highschoolers.

On an island with a bar that didn't card.

It evened out.

"Just... get to it," Algren sighed. And then he picked up a catalog to gape at in disbelief. In his day and age, costumes like this were practically hardcore pornography.

[OCD is finally up, and the links to those costumes may or may not be mildly not worksafe. Nothing like that Japanese woodcut with the octopus!]

"What?" Karla demanded. "You know I'm right. This isn't a lesson--it's a joke! And a horribly tasteless one at that!"

Someone's brand spankin' new issues were showing.

"She's got a point," Tony commented.

Karla glanced Tony's way and gave him a brief, grateful smile.

"Right, I hope you're done shouting your valid opinion in a way that invalidates it," Jim replied in a lazy drawl. "If you're so upset about the ridiculousness of the costumes, I suggest you talk to the people that make them instead of complaining to me."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Karla asked in a sweetly scathing tone. "Would my opinion have been more valid if I wore one of those before trying to attract your attention, Captain? Though I can see your confusion about me adressing my question to you. Here I was, trying to ask about academics."

"No, your opinion would be more valid by not shouting," Jim replied, not reacting beyond an amused look. "I prefer my women legal and willing, neither of which you are. So. Moving on."

"Yes, and one day I'll be legal," Karla said, righting her chair with Craft and then sitting. "but that's as close as it'll ever get."
