"Hi," Tyler said laconic at the front of the room. "I don't get to teach on Halloween this year. Which is good, 'cause I don't think any of you need to see me on a Saturday."

"But" -- he added -- "we're still doing the lab I did last year. It's a very complicated reaction -- here, have a handout. The supplies are on the lab tables. You should probably work in pairs, and it's very important you remember the quality control role of your instructor."

A beat. "If you need help with the write-up on the experiment, there's a easier version at the table at the front of class."

He watched the class for a second."Questions? Comments? Oh, and if you have a violent nut allergy, tell me before I have to take you to the clinic. I have an alternate assignment for you."

He'd do the assignment if he had to, but he didn't really want to waste anything, considering he wasn't going to eat it.

Tyler had hoped someone would ask about that, really.

"Swedish lemon angels," he said, rummaging around for the recipe. "It's a similar concept" -- in that they were both sort of joke recipes -- "but no nuts are involved. You'd have to go up to home ec to use their ovens."

He was proud of himself for remembering nut allergies existed. He just hadn't quite realized parts of his class might be non-eating.

Jono eyed the recipe for a moment more, and then nodded faintly.

//Interesting trade-off, that,// he noted, and then idly rubbed at the back of his neck. //I suppose I can always give what I make to somebody else, hm?//

Though, if he happened to make the alternative recipe there, that would be something of a moot point, wouldn't it?

"You could do that with the -- original experiment," Tyler pointed out. "The lemon angels recipe can be tricky."

As in, literally a trick.

"I don't have anything that isn't food-related ready. I'm sorry."

Jono gave the lemon angels recipe another look over.

Ooooh.

//That's fine,// he replied, nodding slightly. //I've really got no preference either way, then. Which do yer prefer I do? Make the 'Foamed Saccharides,' or a mess?//

"Make the mess," Tyler said, with a grim smile because he really should have thought things through a little better. "Cover your work surface with paper towels and go to town."

Jono wasn't going to hold it against Tyler, here. The rest of the class could eat, and it wasn't as though the vast majority of the population of the planet had to plan around a "student with half a face" scenario.

Oh, he was going to get lemony foam everywhere.

The thing about Fandom was the 'student with half a face' issue was likely to come up much more often than peanut allergies.
