Adventures in Literature, Wednesday, Period Three [Class Seven]

Drake was all decked out like a medieval knight today. Someone really didn't get to play dress-up enough as a kid.

"Ivanhoe," he began the class, "was written in 1819 by Sir Walter Scott, who is credited with inventing the modern historical novel, and if that isn't an oxymoron I don't know what is. Mark Twain hated the guy and is credited with inventing the modern bitchy author when he named a boat the Walter Scott in his own book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and then proceeded to sink it.

"Ivanhoe takes place in 12th century medieval England, the same setting as Robin Hood -- and Robin and his band of merry men appear as characters in this story. The main character, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, has been disinherited by his father, Cedric of Rotherwood, for supporting the Norman King Richard I and for falling in love with the Lady Rowena, Cedric's ward, who had been promised to a Saxon lord who was gunning for the throne of England. Just like in Robin Hood, Richard's been captured by the enemy, and his brother, John I, has parked his butt on said throne. Ivanhoe comes back from the Crusades in disguise and wins a tournament and...you know what, I'm still in fall break slack mode, so I'm going to just let you watch the 1952 film with Lizzy Taylor. Enjoy!"

Francine...was not likely to get twitchy at the turkey. Hungry, yes.

It wasn't really history anyhow. The anachronisms washed right over Didi as she let herself get lost in the story,

There were tomatoes in Gabrielle's ancient Greece. One of the first stories she'd heard Homer tell at the Academy was about Spartacus. The Tao te Ching had already been written and Athens had already colonized Amphipolis but the battle of Marathon hadn't taken place yet, and yet they'd already met Hippocrates and it had been ten years since Xena's dalliance with Julius Caesar. And, though she hadn't visited it yet, a town where people dueled in the streets with rapiers and dressed like characters out of Shakespeare. You think turkey during a feast that was way after her time (and yet, the way her world worked, probably not all that far off) would make Gabrielle so much as raise an eyebrow?

Please. Medusa would get a crew cut first.

But oooh. The movie was neat.

Like Karla had any idea what Earth history was like, so she wasn't about to get caught up in what was or was not historically accurate. She was going to call in a blanket and some snacks, share around with people sitting nearby and watch the movie.

Like Emma cared. She was still too tired from shopping and play rehearsal yesterday, so she was going to curl up in her desk and nap for a bit.

Sam was more amused by the anachronisms than twitchy. He didn't mind getting to settle back and relax for one class period.

Hinata didn't know anything about this world's history other than what she'd learnt in classes, so the fact about the turkey completely passed her by while she watched the movie.

Ooh. A movie. If Joolushko had known to look for inaccuracies like the turkey, she would have gained a lot of enjoyment from doing so. Instead she was just enjoying watching the movie.

Cordelia didn't care about the turkey, she was too busy sighing over the dresses.
