Hubris from Revelation: the Social Engineering of Ultimate Truths [Monday, Period 2]

The class met in the Danger Room today, which was set up into a series of different rooms. Most of them were full of very heavy furniture. The last one was full of low tables with tea kettles resting on top.

"Your professor asked me to come in and discuss my time in Afghanistan when I studied under one of the magi and learned the Tao," Biff said, smiling at Ghanima. "I might have forgotten to mention that Josh learned about the Tao. I learned about feng shui, which is dependent on something called qi, and then the rest of it I ignored because I was being taught by beautiful Chinese concubines and I got distracted easily."

Ghanima, meanwhile, was sitting in the back of the room. To any outside observer, she looked quite studious and duly interested in what the guest teacher was saying.

To anyone that actually knew her - Biff included - she was actually dying of amusement.

He pointed at a series of small brass scales on a nearby table. "What I do know is that the qi in all of those rooms is totally screwed up. You take these brass scales and someone who looks good at lifting heavy objects and start moving things around until the qi is balanced again. When the little brass scales balance, you've completed the task. When you're done, come back and have a cup of tea and I'll tell you more about the Tao as I read from the Book of the Divine Elixirs or the Nine Tripods of the Yellow Emperor."

He certainly hadn't messed with the tea, as a subtle manipulator of the elements might do. Except for how he had.

"Looks like it," Ben said, glancing at the little brass scale with distaste. "Strange religion. Think we could just make the scales balance on their own?"

"You don't think there'd be a preventative measure in place for that?" Jonas asked and then frowned. "Though, really, if the people who followed this religion though furniture was to be blamed for bad things, I don't know if they'd think of that."

Ben walked over to the scale and crouched down, then set the scale swinging with a poke from his finger. "I don't know what it's measuring," he said. "Is qi just another word for the Force, maybe?"

He didn't ask why the Force would care about furniture arrangement, either.

"Qi sounds like an exotic fruit to me," Jonas admitted honestly. "Though, I wouldn't know what one of those would be either. I've never heard the word before."

"Sounds like a first name back home, too," Ben said with a little laugh. "Okay, let's move the couch from one side of the room to the other and see if that appeases the scale."

"That seems logical," Jonas said, giving Ben a nod and making his way to one side of the couch. "There's really not much you can do with such big items anyway."

"Unless we put it into someone else's room," Ben said with a mischievous grin.

"That would require a lot of carrying," Jonas said, obviously not knowing what dear old Ben could do. "But, that's another possible resolution. Perhaps the couch doesn't belong at all?"

"We should put it in the hallway," Ben declared, laughing. "Let the guest teacher deal with it."

"There were no given rules as to where to put it," Jonas said, deciding he liked Ben's idea. "I think moving it to the hallway is a good idea."

Ben walked over to one side of the sofa and grinned. "On three?" he said.

Jonas crouched down, getting a good grip on the sofa and nodded. "You count. I'm ready to go."

"One, two, three," Ben counted off, then lifted with a hefty assist from the Force. The sofa was much lighter than it should be now. Big cheater.

Jonas, expecting the couch to be much heavier, almost fell backwards when it wasn't. He regained his balance quickly though and kept a good hold on the couch.

"Out the door now?" he asked, peering over the couch.

"Yes," Ben said, "and against the wall. I'm sure it's not good for anyone's qi if someone barks their shin against it."

"Good plan," Jonas said, slowly moving himself towards the door and making sure he didn't step on or trip over anything on the way.
