When the students filed into the classroom today, they might notice that Algren didn't look... entirely uncomfortable as he glanced at his notes on today's subject matter. Either this was because he was hell-bent on not letting it seem as though Jim was getting to him, or else it was the fact that he had a passing awareness about this one even before he'd learned he was to teach this class.
"Today," he announced, loud and clear and damn it, proudly if he could manage, "we're covering pornography in Japan's Edo Period, which spanned from 1603 to the year 1868. In this era, Japan was opening up and beginning to study many Western ideas, from the sciences to the arts. Popular culture flourished, and, as the population of the city of Edo was over 60% male, naturally such popular culture surfaced in forms that men found most appealing."
Well, Jim made sure to bring in enoughINSANELY NWS pictures for the class to make him turn red.
"And with a mix that would put modern pornography to shame," Jim added. "There is something to be said of how interesting the imagination can be. The Shunga, or pornographic woodblocks, could be borrowed from rental book shops. Also very similar to what you can get today. Interesting how things can be so alike across the centuries, isn't it?"
Algren wasn't going to look. Algren wasn't going to look. Algren wasn't going to look.
"... Is that an octopus?" Well, so much for that. Maybe if he just cleared his throat and soldiered blindly forward, all would be well again in the world. "The Meiji Restoration, which spanned the latter half of the 19th century, including some of the Edo period, saw the decline of such materials, due to government fears that such an openly sexual mindset would affect their standing among European countries. The fear was that such openness to pornography would make the Europeans believe that Japan was a backwards nation, in spite of the fact that many of their erotic artworks were still being exported to foreign nations."
It was and Jim was also... pretty disturbed by it. Oh, Japan.
"While they were still produced underground, it was no longer as freely accepted as they had once been. That is, of course, only for that era. Anyone with a computer can tell you that it's a flourishing business in Japan and elsewhere. So. To get you in the mindframe of Edo era Japan... we'd like you to try a dating simulation. I heard they're pretty popular, right Nathan?"
"I wouldn't know," Algren replied, dryly. "I couldn't get past the date stage."
Yes. He'd tried. Shut up.
"Of course you couldn't," Jim said, smiling far too widely.
