Swordplay - 3rd Period - 10/1

It was that day. That maaagical day. Finally, people would be allowed to get with the fighty.

Deadpool was all a twitter. And possibly updating his Twitter. Who knows?

OMFG class is starting. I need a better cellphone.

"So, we all know what today is, riiiiiight class?" Deadpool asked, pacing the danger shop as he shoved his cell phone back in one of the handy pouches. "Oh yeah, it's the day you all get to try out the swords for realio."

He waved over toward some vests, helmets and foils.

"Since, this is the first one time, we'll start easy with fencing foils. They make a beeping noise when you poke someone with them."

There was a pause before he rather suddenly poked one of his TAs with it to get an obnoxious beep. "See?"

Arthur shot him a look that was distinctly unamused, but chose to say nothing. For now.

Next time he was gonna pick the fun TA to stab.

"So, partner up and see if you can play Frere Jacque with the beeps!"

Claire was cheerful and practically bounced over to Zack. "Wanna pair up?"

Pretty, bouncy girl, incoming! Zack grinned and offered her a cheerful nod in greeting.

"I'd love to! Do you have any experience with fencing, at all?"

"Nope! But I learn pretty quick," Claire said, getting into her protective gear even though it was completely unnecessary.

Meanwhile, Zack continued to resist the helmet. Resist!

"Learning quickly is great! I don't really have much experience with fencing, per se, but I do make a living off of working with a sword. So we won't both be flying blindly, you know?"

He wasn't going to bother with the vest either, no. He already had armor on. Zack, you terrible role-model, you.

Claire raised an eyebrow at his lack of gear, but figured it wasn't her job to make sure he protected himself.

"I've never used any kind of sword, so you definitely have the advantage."

"I guess so, but I'm the TA, so it's my job to help teach, not to press an advantage," Zack noted, holding up a finger and grinning before reaching for his foil.

They beeped!

"Want me to just stand on the defensive for a bit, until you get a chance to feel comfortable with the foil?"

Claire giggled at the beeping foils. "Okay, yeah, that might be good," she agreed. "Ready?"

"And able," Zack chirped, taking on a ready stance and grinning. "Whenever you are!"

Claire considered her options for a moment before sweeping her foil towards Zack's neck.

And Zack brought his own foil up to block, smiling and nodding encouragingly.

"Not bad! There was good speed to that!"

"Thanks!" Claire said, pulling her foil away and trying to for a lower stomach thrust.

And Zack's own foil was swishing downward to meet it, though he stopped partway, smirking and letting it hit his armor dead-on.

Beep!

And just for that reason, right there. A moment, please, while he refrains from giggling.

"That was a good one, too," he noted. "Think you can do it again, and keep the motions a little more tight? The great thing about such light swords is that you get so much more control over where they go than you would with something heavy, like my broadsword."

Yay for beeping!

"I can try, sure," Claire said.

"Excellent." Zack shook his arms out, loosening up some before pointing at the middle of his chest. "Get me right there, then. Keep it tight and quick. More thrust than swish, you know?"

'Swish' was totally the technical term, if you asked Zack. Sssh.

Claire nodded because, yeah, 'swish' was definitely a technical term.

She followed Zack's directions, keeping her movements tighter and quicker as she thrust the foil at Zack's chest again.

"Much better!" His foil swatted hers to the side before she could get his chest, and he nodded approvingly. "Seems like you've got a good grasp on the weight and reach of your weapon."

"Well, it's light," Claire pointed out. "I'm not sure I'd do so well with something heavier."

Which meant she should probably start working on building upper body strength.

"Light is fine, though," Zack replied, shrugging. "I mean, take the little nubby thing off the end, and one of these could be just as much a weapon as something heavier, if it's used right. My sword chops and slices at things. These poke messy holes. That's just as effective, when it's done right."

Claire nodded. "Good point. I'm hoping we'll get to work with a few different styles so I can figure out what I like best."
