Anyone Can Cook, 9/22/09, Period 4

"Bonjour class," Colette said coolly from behind the table at the front of the room. She held up a smallish, white oval object. "Today we will discuss the cook's greatest resource, the common chicken's egg. It can be used in a sweet dish, or a savory one; it can be eaten on its own or mixed with a thousand things. And, if one is concerned about such things" -- and Colette was clearly dubious about this -- "it is a source of protein that does not involve hurting an animal."

She neatly cracked the egg into a small glass bowl, then held the results aloft. "As I might hope you know, the egg has two parts, the clear white and the yellow yolk. Most of the fat and cholesterol in the egg is concentrated in the yolk, while the white can be aerated into a stiff foam for use in baked goods."

She set down the bowl and shell, then talked some more about the value of eggs as food. "Today, class, you will have two options. Those of you who see yourselves as beginners will simply make a hard-boiled or fried egg from the directions by your workstations, while those of you who have been cooking for some time may try a basic cheese souffle, traditional French omelet or poached egg. Begin."

Joan decided to attempt the omelet. It seemed easy enough.

Liir went for the souffle, of course. He was fine on his own, but he wouldn't mind company either.

...he was also whisking the egg whites by hand.

Sookie had eaten a poached egg, but never understood the amount of work that went into them. So today she was trying her hand at those, considering that she'd already made omelets before, and a souffle sounded yummy but not necessarily something she'd want to try to consume on her own. She was watching her figure when she felt like it, after all.

Layla was by no means an accomplished cook but she decided to try making the cheese soufflé. Only with blue cheese.

It worked but you could bet that only Layla would ever eat such a thing.

After thinking about it carefully, Kate decided to try making an omelet. That should turn out just fine. Hopefully.

Priestly was totally in an omelettey mood, and spent a few minutes trying to work out what kinds of stuff he wanted to fold into it.

Helen made a very nice egg souffle with a little cheese.

Kyle stared at the eggs for a while. On the one hand, he didn't want to eat something that he couldn't see the inside of first (nor did he want to waste time cooking it if it was bad). On the other hand, there was a good chance he'd mess up cracking an egg to fry it, which would be a waste of resources.

Eventually he went with trying to crack the egg to fry it. Yeah, there were bits of shell in there. He knew where they all were though and planned to pick them out later.

An omelet seemed like something at Sam's level, especially since he knew he could add other things to it, so he set about doing just that.
