World Wars in the Media, Tuesday

"In 1919, the Great War officially ended," Mitchell started. "It'd run its course by 1918, of course, but it wasn't until June that next year when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The nationalism that had started the war had sunk into the mud by the time the people had realised that there was no such thing as a glorious death in battle..." If he sounded a little invested in this particular lesson, well, he had his reasons. "Just boys dying alone and terrified on the open terrain for a single square foot of territory, or some general's bragging rights." He gestured. "Not that that meant much, at the time. In fact, during the war, conscientous objectors were frowned upon. Might seem off now, but the Americans actually banned free speech-- they called it 'espionage', or 'interfering with the American war effort'."

He snorted. "Yeah, that was a fine move. But we'll talk more about that by the time Vietnam rolls along. Anyway, the net result was that all of that propaganda-- all of that optimism, that fine faith in what made your country great had evaporated. Some people limped back to their homes and nursed their wounds; others made efforts for a more international world, to make sure that what had happened before didn't happen again. The allies had won, but at what cost?" He shrugged. "And then there was Germany."

He reached over towards the keyboard by his feet, and pressed a button, revealing an image on the back wall. "The Treaty of Versailles," he said. "The treaty to end all wars. So they said. It broke down the war to one simple premise: Germany was at fault." He paused, glancing around the room. "Remember how this whole mess got started? Do you think that's a fair cop? The Germans certainly didn't. Especially not since they'd lost the most soldiers out of anyone involved."

He nodded at Dinah if she was there to pass around the handout. "The treaty was a compromise, and an unhappy one at that - the French wanted revenge, the British wanted to make sure the communists weren't going to go barging into Europe and needed Germany for a buffer, and the Americans just wanted to get off the continent. So they crippled the country just enough, made them pay regular fines they didn't have the money for, stripped it of some land, but left it otherwise intact."

He swung his feet. "Nobody was happy about this," he said. "Nobody got exactly what they wanted. Look at the other set of handouts. This was the discussion being had in the press of most of these countries. In a world that was demoralized and looking for someone to blame-- do you think they picked the right strategy at all?" A pause. "Don't answer that - the answer would be no. Think about the environment this bred, though... if you were looking to take advantage of this situation for whatever purpose - although with you lot, I'm hoping it's peace... pick a side, pick a partner, talk about what you might have done, following Versailles, to use the buzz in the media."

"See, yeah. I mean, I do kind of think Germany really started it, even with the whole stupid assassination in Serbia, but it's not like everyone else didn't love the idea and pile on to get goodies they thought they could keep." Dinah shook her head. "I just don't get that mindset, of how much... pride, goes into the country thing. Maybe I'm too used to looking at our leaders and going 'meh.'"

Kate nodded a few times, then sank a little in her chair. "...Would this be a good moment to point out how badly I zoned out for most of the lecture?"

Dinah snickered, then straightened and tried to look TA-ly. "Treaty of Versaille, Germany pwned, world depressed, war called until next round in 1933. Works?" She grinned, then pulled up one leg, and started doodling on her hand out. "Thinking deep thoughts during the lecture, or wondering about tomorrow night's ANTM?"
vanillajello: (Smiling and looking down.)

"Very professional and speedy, good, thank you," Kate chuckled. "I was just thinking about stuff. Parents Weekend and stuff like that."

"Ooo, right. That's coming up." Dinah bit her lip, thinking about Barbara and wheelchair access, and looking around the classroom, wondering if there was a service elevator somewhere in the school. "I need to figure stuff out for that, if my sisters can make it."
vanillajello: (Smiling.)

Kate was more in the business of figuring out how she could stop at least part of her family from coming. But she wasn't going to talk about that.

"You have sisters?"

"Two, yeah. Adoptive. And a lot older than me. Barbara's thirty-two, and Helena's twenty-five." Dinah perched her chin on her hands, biting her lip. "I think they can make it, they've got busy jobs, but at least for Saturday, and they know the place is weird, I just... kind of hope they only talk to my teachers. You know?" She tilted her head. "Will your brother be bringing Muffins of Triumph, do you think?"
vanillajello: (Calm and looking at you.)

"The teachers are better for that, yeah," Kate nodded with a thoughtful pout. "And I don't know. That's up to Moosh really, and whether he deems it triumphant to come here. But he's probably bringing some kind of baked goods in any case."

"Cool! I hope I get to meet him." She grinned, then sighed, now as thoughtful as Kate on the subject. "It's not like I'm not doing well in my classes, I just... don't want them worried. Do your parents know what this place is like?"
vanillajello: (What the hell are you saying?)

Re: Discuss

"Oh, hell no," Kate said, wincing at the thought. "I mean, they know it's not like other schools, but they don't know anything about the actual weird stuff. And I so don't want to worry them."

"Yeeeeah." Dinah considered that, then said, "Better not let them meet Vice Principal Deadpool. Or they'd catch on in a heartbeat."
vanillajello: (So not happy.)

"...Do you think we could ask him to leave the island for the weekend?" Kate wondered. "I had enough trouble trying to make Leto seem normal. There's nothing I could do about Mr. Deadpool."

"I think he's the sort of person who'd insist on staying, and introducing your parents to the Office Moose if you did." Dinah wrinkled her nose. "You could steer them away from him, and say he's part of the entertainment?" That might actually fly. Maybe.
vanillajello: (Tired of crap.)

"Maybe, although that doesn't help much in the bigger picture." A heavy sigh. "There's way too much stuff that I should hide here."

Re: Discuss

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah gave her a sympathetic look. "You think they'll want you to go back to Overland Park, if they get the whole picture?"
vanillajello: (Talking to Ben.)

"I know they would. And it would just be a huge mess and I seriously don't even want to think about that happening." She made a face again, and shook her head.

Dinah gave her a sympathetic look. "Good luck? And, well. I'd offer to run interference, but I don't know how much help I can be that weekend... but if you do need it and I'm around, I will."
vanillajello: (Smiling.)

"Thanks," Kate said. "I hope it doesn't come to that."
