Classical Genre [Tuesday, 1st Period]

As per usual, there was coffee, there were pastries, and there was Rick.

"Morning, kids," Rick said, cheerfully. "Today we're looking at science fiction again. Only this time we're looking at films and television."

"Now there's a lot I could say on the subject," he said. "I could talk about how Mister What, by virtue of its long life has informed entire generations of fans. I could talk about what the differing trends towards optimistic versus pessimistic outcomes in British and American sci-fi say about the times and places they were made in. I could talk about how fan support managed to buy Lightning Bug, and its ruggedly handsome Captain, a new lease on life. I could talk about some of the factors that lead to most popular science fiction films and shows not being very sciencey at all.

"But really, when it comes down to it, science fiction media boils down to one important question. Space Battles or Galaxy Quest?" Rick paused to let that sink in. "The correct answer is both."

Rick pointed to a random student. "Same as last week, talk about what you watched, and how you liked it."

Rick held up a sheet of paper. "Remember to take a copy of your reading lists for fantasy. Same deal as for sci-fi, one book by next week, one film by the week after." He paused a moment to think it over. "Actually, considering how long they can get, make it a film by next week, book the week after, and don't ever say I never did anything for you."

She listened and at the same time, studied her list of books and films to check out.

Hmm.

For not the first time since being in this class, Valentine found herself contemplating how the definition of classical genre must have changed within the course of the hundred and seventy years separating her time from this time. Not that she minded going over science fiction instead of the Bible or Wuthering Heights.

Dinah was already wondering if she could take over the Common Room some night to introduce new people to The Tiger, the Enchantress, and the Closet. She loved that one.

Harper fiddled with her crutches as she listened to the lecture. Not that she really needed the crutches today, since her ankle felt okay. But the crutches totally went with her outfit.

"I watched Galaxy Quest," Helen said. "And while it was a bit silly, it was oddly enjoyable."

"It's...interesting," Valentine mused idly. "I watched a little of both, and, well, I'm from the future. A future. And my future holds a lot of space travel, but I'm pretty sure it isn't going to be much at all like either of those. But that's just because my future is probably grounded more in reality. Still, they were entertaining, probably more so than actual space travel is going to be."

"Galaxy Quest. Which I liked for getting the fans involved in the outcome," Dinah said. "I also watched some of the new Strifenova Celestial, and it was very... grim. Really, it could've been a war-and-refugee movie, except they were in space with killer cloned robots."

"I ended up watching Space Battle and Galaxy Quest since I wasn't able to get around much," said Harper. "Overall, I thought they were both really good, even though they had some goofy moments."

"I watched both Galaxy Quest and Space battles, and I liked them both. Each for different reasons. Galaxy Quest had much more social commentary and satire which I liked. Space Battles was much more like King of the Bracelets in Space."

"First I watched Strifenova Celestial. Just the first two seasons. I have the other two, but I haven't got around to them yet. I like the production values and the writing, and how it has women kicking butt." She grinned. "The lead pilot is cute too. But it got really depressing, so I switched to Lightning Bug. Cowboys in space! What's not to like? The writer is so talented."

"I watched Space Battles for like, the 600th time. And there is nothing about it I didn't like."

He paused and then grinned. "Except for the fact that I don't have one of those ships yet."

"I watched Lightning Bug," Joolushko said. "It was entertaining." And yes, that captain certainly had been ruggedly handsome. For a human. "But I found the idea of so many planets and only one species very odd. How did they never manage to come across another species?" Perhaps the other species had seen the humans coming and run away in fear? It was possible.
