Fencing Club - Salle, Monday After Classes

Edmund was in before he needed to be, setting up for Fencing Club. When everyone arrived, he addressed them. "Welcome back. We'll get some hands-on experience this week. On this rack you'll find the wooden training swords we'll be using today. Zayne, your weighted sword is down on the end there." He picked one up. "They're very different from standard fencing foils. If you're interested in practising with a foil later in the semester, let me know and I'll arrange it.

Those with experience, you're welcome to partner off and use this time for sparring, or you can join the rest of us in footwork drills. I'll demonstrate, then you can practice them on your own until you feel comfortable enough to partner with someone."

"Hey, I'm new at this!" Turtle laughed, still fairly nervous. "You've been doing training and stuff."

"Yup." And they were on her battlefield now, yes. Turtle might be better at school, and being charge of things, but... Well. Dinah would still go easy on her.

This week.

"Get into position," she said, assuming the stance she'd learned from Arthur. "And careful of your feet."

Turtle sucked in a deep breath, nodding as she settled into a stance that was at least in part mimicking Dinah's.

"Always," she said. "Dad's a podiatrist. Caring for feet is just genetic."

Dinah grinned, and said, "Cool. Then this'll be easy for you." And started to circle Turtle, guard up, watching for her first move.

Oh, sure, make the newbie go first. Turtle sucked in a breath again, thought about it for a second, and, with a customary sort of shout, she charged forward, pulling her practice sword back and swinging it forward, sweeping it level with the ground toward Dinah's shoulders.

Dinah suddenly got how amused Arthur must feel with her, some days, but stepped on the feeling as fast as she could. She moved out of the way of Turtle's charge, and brought her sword up to block at an angle, and carefully swept Turtle's sword downward and to the side. Then lifted hers to just tap Turtle on the wrist. "You're gonna wear yourself out like that," she noted, stepping back, back on guard.

"Ow," Turtle said at the tap although it clearly didn't hurt; however, everything Dinah had done, she'd accomplished with flying colors, since Turtle still didn't really know what she was doing. She backed up. "Energy. This, coming from the bouncy queen of the world?"

Dinah's eyes narrowed, and she cocked her head. "Yes. Learned the hard way." She decided to stay still this time, and said, "It was easy to see where you were going to go. Circle someone first. Look for an opening. Try to be sneaky?" She raised an eyebrow. "Pretend it's Student Council?"

Re: General Sparring

Turtle considered this. "Like Student Council."

Which Turtle did not approach at all in circles or sneakily. She met it head on. With force and enthusiasm.

"Okay, then."

Turtle should have gone for the shins. That would have been the best representation of what Dinah had meant to tell her. But Dinah was a voter, and she knew that wasn't what Dinah meant, so she just ran forward to 'run' her sword straight into Dinah's stomach.

Dinah did not facepalm. Because, hey, she had to be saying it wrong. Somehow. And it gave her an excuse to do a spin thing of diverting Turtle's sword around her, and ending up behind her. And then tapping her shoulder with one finger. "Maybe I should rephrase that."

"You contradicted yourself, Dinah," Turtle said with a grin, wrinkling her nose as she spun around and settled into a defensive stance. And started circling. "You told me to be sneaky, but then said think like it's Student Council. I attack Student Council head on and full of boom."

"My mistake," Dinah said dryly. "Okay, hmm. How about..." How did she start? Oh. With Alice, not against Arthur, just exchanging blows. "Okay. Tap my sword first, okay? Then we'll go back and forth, just so you get used to it, and when you see an opening, try to poke me. That work?"

"Just....tap it?"

Re: General Sparring

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah reached out and tapped hers against Turtle's, then tapped the other side. "Like that. You had to have done this when you were a kid, right?"

Re: General Sparring

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle smirked a little, and tapped Dinah's sword a little. One side. Then the other. "Not really. My sister's a total girly girl and I was too busy reading the Wall Street Journal when I was a kid. Besides, I wanted to be a witch. I just had a broom."

Re: General Sparring

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah grinned, tap-tap, then reached a little, to feint past Turtle. "I did. But I was, well. Even more hyper, when I was little." At least until she moved to Missouri. "I get the witch thing, but seriously. The Wall Street Journal?" She added, "Watch your feet. Keep your balance."

"I'm watching, I'm watching!" Turtle insisted. She was even shuffling them a little, skirting around Dinah as she dodged the feint, and then went to meet Dinah's sword with three quicker taps. "And I was what was easily available to me, and I liked it."

"Hunh." Dinah blinked and shook her head. "No wonder you own a store now." She reached out to tap Turtle's sword back, then went to tap her arm so she'd keep it closer to her body. "Now you're getting it."

Re: General Sparring

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-09-16 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
She was getting it, or at least Turtle felt she was, especially as she could sort of see that Dinah was going to a tap on the shoulder and she moved, quickly, to the side a little, to avoid the tap and go to tap Dinah's shoulder instead.

She was learning a lot more about this fighting stuff, after all.

DInah grinned and let her have that touch, and tapped her sword again as she withdrew. "It's in the rhythm. THat's all."
