Driver's Ed [Thursday, Week 2, Period 2]

"Good morning," Ziva said once everyone had taken their seats, "and welcome back. I am very happy to see all of you again." It was reassuring to know that she hadn't frightened anyone away somehow. "Last week, many of you indicated that you are unfamiliar with driving motor vehicles. Therefore, before we proceed any further, I believe it would be best to discuss the basics of how vehicles work here." Whether "here" meant the Danger Shop or Planet Earth was anyone's guess. She was getting close to accepting her most special students, honestly.

Ziva brought up a basic car diagram, and went through all the parts at a steady pace, just slow enough that note taking might not be a problem. Once that was done, she grabbed the controls for the Danger Shop, and the room changed from a classroom to an outdoor setting, putting everyone in a field by an oval racetrack and a handful of very plain-looking cars.

"Now, I could spend all day telling you the intricate details of how a car works, but nothing will teach you better than actually driving. I would like you all to break into pairs and take some turns around the track. If you are inexperienced, try to pair up with someone who has driven before, but do not worry about that too much. Because we are in here, you will not get hurt if you do not do well. Is that clear?" It might have been, amazingly enough for her. "Then get to it."

Like it's almost the weekend!

Take notes, pass notes, and try not to fall asleep if you already know this stuff.

This week, the cars are standard American driver's ed cars which means a) the steering wheel is on the left (sorry Brits!), and b) there's a brake on the passenger side as well. Do with that what you wish.

Ziva was off to the side while everyone was driving, nursing a cup of coffee. Sweet, precious coffee.

Whyyyyy does the new season of NCIS start weeks and weeks later than the rest of my shows? *sadface*

Harper was still hobbling around on crutches, so she was on the look-out for a partner who was willing to do the driving.

Oh, boy. Jill really hated this part. "Um, Ms. David?" Jill said tentatively. "Hi. I'm Jill? I'm in your class. There was this guy last week?"

Ziva ran through names in her head for a moment, trying to remember the ones she'd learned last week. "Jack?" she said. "Yes, he does not seem to be here this week."

"Right, Jack," Jill said. "Jack's gone. I'm here now. It's kind of..." she wasn't sure how much of this Jack had explained, if any. He was such a jerk. "We switch?"

"He mentioned something about cycling," she said. She hadn't been sure about whether or not to believe him, or about what that truly meant. "Do you share information when you switch?"

"Have you driven before?"

"Yeah, we--um, sort of? He's better at digging around in my memory than I am at his. But I get some of it."

Shilo Wallace

"Omigosh, are you okay?"

Shilo wasn't sure if she'd met this girl yet, but that wasn't going to stop her from being concerned. Or eventually offering to be her partner.

SPOILER ALERT: I SANK IT.

"I had a bad fall and twisted my ankle, but it's getting better," said Harper, showing off the glittery elastic bandage on her foot. Of course she had decorated it.

"But the problem is that I won't be able to drive this with my bad foot," she added.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Shilo replied. "Do you want to pair up with me?"

"Oooh, yes, that would be great! I'm Harper, by the way," she said.

"I'm Shilo." She went around and opened the door for Harper, since she had her hands full with the crutches.

Everyone had just been so nice when she was struggling with her crutches! Harper wasn't sure she wanted to give them up when she got better. "Thanks," she said, climbing into the passenger seat. "Have you driven before?"

"Um, no," Shilo said. "But that's what this class is all about, right? Learning how to drive?"

And with that reassuring thought, she left to jog around the car and get in on the driver's side.

"Yup, that's what we're here for," said Harper. "Though the only cars I've really been in are taxis. I don't know if my parents even drive at all. We take the subway everywhere."

"Really? I've only read about the subway." Shilo buckled herself in and began going through the pre-driving checklist. Hopefully Harper was ready for culture shock today.

A little culture shock could be good for Harper, actually.

"Oh, yeah, the subway is the only way to get around New York City. That's where I'm from," she said, buckling her seat belt.

"Oh really? Me too." Shilo finally started the car. "What year?"

"This year, of course," said Harper, giving Shilo an odd look.

Yeah, she'd been in Fandom for a while, but sometimes Harper wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box.

"Lucky you," Shilo replied. "I've had to adjust, myself. And you'd probably never recognize New York if you came to my time."

"New York without subways? I'm not sure I could get used to that idea," said Harper. "Do you at least have taxis?"

Shilo thought about it for a moment. "We might..? I've never ridden in one. Only in a limo."

"Oh, we have limos in my New York, too! I've seen them around, especially during Fashion Week," said Harper.

The more Ziva heard about this situation, the more curious she became, but she didn't want to drill the poor girl for details. Clearly, she was mellowing out here.

"You missed nothing of importance last week," she said. "We merely discussed the experience each student already has. Much of the class will be hands-on experience, so if you ever find yourself feeling as though you are missing vital information, I would be happy to assist you."

"Oh, okay," Shilo said, still driving, albeit very slowly. "Well, only a few people had a car in my time, and those who did had enough money to afford a limo."
