Oceanography [Thursday, Week 2, Period Five]

When the students entered the classroom, they'd see a long table in the front of the room with different types of coral on it. Some looked healthy and others, not so much.

"I hope everyone's having a good week," Summer said, once the students settled down. "Today, we'll be focusing on coral reefs." She pointed to the different types in the front of the room and explained how they were made and where they could be found.

The pieces of coral up front had been dried and cleaned, so they presented no danger to the students. "You guys can take your time inspecting the coral and if you want, you can take a piece back with you." Summer had a couple in her office, courtesy of her brother.

"Next week, if the weather holds, we'll be headed to the beach," Summer explained. "If the weather doesn't hold, we'll meet here and post pone the trip for another day."

Leto listened with interest. He was aware of the existence of corals, but had never studied them before.

Cal took various idle notes, ones that were most likely trying to develop into some sort of poem about how the afterlife sustains life, without much success.

Coral. Anemone was going to sit here and draw pictures of fish swimming around coral reefs while glancing at the samples.

It was neat and kinda strange to see the species that would eventually mutate and evolve to become, well, her. Or her siblings, at least.

Joan listened with interest to the lecture.

Cal found himself poking at two separate pieces (http://kansasadventure.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/more-large-coral-pieces.jpg) of coral, contemplating their differences. Not deeply, or anything, but still, he was a very contemplative person.

The coral was really pretty and Joan chose a small piece to take with her.

Leto studied the pieces of coral, thinking about how vulnerable the ecosystems that had created these complex structures were. In that sense, they were similar to the desert.

And he was! Cal was there, being TA as needed, and thinking about how coral was pretty and the teacher was hot, while trying to seem as though he wasn't thinking either of those things.

A very typical way for Cal to occupy his mind in a class, really.
