Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #2

There had totes been an E-mail sent to the students telling them to meet in the shooting range today. Which was why Aeryn greeted her class there, see. It would be appreciated if people would take note of the rules on the door:

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE

"Last wee the topic of weapons came up, and I think now is as good as any time to talk about those," she began. "When I first arrived here, we were able to carry our weapons with us. This changed not too long after which I don't understand, but I believe it was because this is a school and they generally frown on students using things that can kill other students on school property." Because they might do things like shoot certain future time agents in the ass, Aeryn. "At any rate, people come here from militaristic backgrounds, or violent worlds, and so weapons are a presence. We just trust that those that carry them know how to use them responsibility. Then again, some people might be on the more pacifistic side of things," said Aeryn, and wow did she not understand how anyone could think that way, "and we need to recognize that some might not be comfortable with you being armed. Which is fine. But you do also realize that things do invade here. You might have to find a weapon with which to defend yourself sometime, or you might need to count on someone armed for assistance.

"As for how this relates to the real world, well. They don't like you to carry them there. There are laws about concealed weapons, but people get very upset if you carry an unconcealed weapon, so I'm not sure what they want you to do there. People on Earth- at least this part of it- don't much like them. If you carry them, you have to be very careful with how you hide them on your person. Jackets are good for this. Same with boots. There are more creative ways as well, but I'm starting you off easy. Just make sure that you're aware that going through any sort of security checkpoint covered in weapons will get you in a lot of trouble."

You did not want to see Aeryn try and go through airport security. You just didn't.

"This is what we're going to be doing today. We have some weapons here. They're all guns, as most of you call them, and they're basically easy to handle You point and shoot." She went through a demonstration of how to shoot the gun at the target (and let it be know that that little paper target got blown right through its little paper head). "And for those of you who may be used to using something that fires plasma or pulse beams, these sorts of weapons can have some kickback, so be very careful, and be sure to obey the rules. If by chance there is anyone who is seriously against handling a weapon," and again, she had no idea why one would, but, "then I want you to go over to that area there and practice hiding water pistols on your person. And know that while I don't mind you bowing out f an activity because you're opposed to it, but if I think you're just trying to get out of doing something because you don't want to I will make you run laps."

This must be the fire arms Triela spoke of. She observed the demonstration and Triela was right, she was impressed. The speed was far superior than any projectile weapon at home.

Chuck and guns... was sort of a bad mix.

Watching all this in movies, was one thing, actually holding a gun was likely to cause flail, and bad things. If Chuck was looking nervous about this activity, that would be why.

Raven was one of those on the pacifist side of things, and she really didn't want to be near anyone shooting. Her expression probably made it clear how uncomfortable she was with the class today.

Worf listened to the lecture closely. While he was no stranger to weapons he was unfamiliar how they were dealt with in this time period.

Mat's eyes gleamed with excitement. This was what Triela was talking about. And they were loud, but seemed slightly safer than, say, tossing a firework into an open fire.

...not that he'd done that.

Well, more than once.

Distance weapons show weakness, fear to let the enemy get too close. Steal the satisfaction of bathing in your enemies' blood. Every day brought some new war for Illyria between the laws that had worked in the past, and the sad reality of the present. But I *am* weak now.

And she had to admit they were effective. And Wesley looked hot while firing them.

These things were loud and while they'd never have any importance to her work as a Dog, Beka watched the demonstration with interest.

Guns seemed far more dangerous than the laser pistols Adora had used while working for the Horde. She took detailed notes on the handling and the rules.

Yakko actually seemed to be paying attention to the lecture.

But really, he was trying to figure out how anyone could possibly think that letting him within a hundred feet of any weapon was a good idea.

Azula took one gun and copied Aeryn's stance, she kept the recoil in mind, took aim and then fired.

Even with the kick back in mind, it still surprised Azula enough and shook her arms and when she looked at the targets she wasn't pleased to see she missed. By a lot.

Worf went through most of the collection of hand guns. For the most part he found them to be crude but effective.

Re: Shoot things

[identity profile] bloody-luck.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It took Mat a few minutes to realign his stance to be something that wasn't better for shooting a bow, and the first shot went wide and almost knocked him backwards with the recoil.

"Blood and ashes," he gaped.

Morgana agreed with the idea of being armed as often as possible, but that was with swords. She'd never actually handled a gun, so she paid a great deal of attention during Aeryn's demonstration, but she still looked uncomfortable as she picked up a gun herself.

[identity profile] provostsdog.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Beka picked up one of the guns. She took a moment to familiarize herself with it, getting used to its weight and finding the stance that made it easiest to aim.

Twas nothing like holding a crossbow, even less like shooting one.

Crude, was Pounce's only comment.

It seemed like such a small thing, even in hands this small. Illyria, clad as requested in protective gear - could she modify her armor to duplicate this? - raised a pistol that looked much like the one that had killed her high priest, pointed it at the paper target, and squeezed.

Recoil? What recoil? Then again, aim, what aim? Had it been human, the bullet would have whizzed past the target's ear without ruffling his hair. Unsatisfactory. This required more practice.

What we've got here is a modification of the TS-113 Sniper Rifle. We've altered its targeting and firing mechanisms to fit the parameters you gave us. Scope works along amplified thermal-- Illyria narrowed her eyes and readied another round. "Be silent," she muttered to no one at all.

Karla took the handgun that she and Triela had practiced with the most often, slid the safety off, and carefully raised the gun towards the target. She squeezed the trigger, making sure to readjust her stance after each round she fired.

The person-shaped targets were new. She knew better than to aim for the head--her aim wasn't that good yet--so she tried for the heart. All of her bullets hit the target, though only two went near the chest. The others went into the target's belly, and once in his shoulder.

Slipping the safety on, she brought the gun back down and reloaded. Dammit, she was going to hit the heart at least once today.

Jon was going to take the end spot and put round after round of holes in the necks of those little paper targets. Lots of holes.

Re: Shoot things

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-09-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yakko picked up a gun, aimed it at the target, and yelled, "BANG! BANG BANG! BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!"

No bullets were fired, but there were several holes in the paper target. And while that clearly could have been impressive, the holes in the target made it clear that he had terrible aim.

Chuck... was not so much in for the violence and shooting when it involved things like, you know, a real gun. He didn't like it, and didn't trust himself not to shoot his own foot. Hiding fake ones on him, however, he could do.

... He might also be pulling the odd cool 007 pose when he thought no one was looking.

Raven approached her teacher after the lecture. "Professor Sun," she asked, "may I please be excused from this class? I am a pacifist, and even handing a mock weapon is uncomfortable for me."
