Fencing Club - Salle, After Classes

Edmund arrived earlier than necessary to make sure the practice swords were out and the area was clear for use. He waited for everyone to arrive and noted silently that this definitely wasn't the kind of club roster he'd been expecting. Still, they wanted to learn, so he would do his best.

"Welcome to Fencing Club. I believe I know most of you now. My name is Edmund Pevensie. The school has seen fit to have Professor Algren supervise us. There are a few ground rules as we'll be dealing with objects that can kill you if you use them improperly. Treat every weapon seriously, even if it's a wooden practice sword, and treat your opponent with respect.

This week will be informal. Please go around the room and introduce yourself and tell everyone what, if any, experience with fencing or swordwork you have. It's okay if you don't have any. We'll work on that."

Sorry it's a wee bit late! I'll make sure it goes up the night before from now on.

Lion-o was in a pretty good mood, looking forward to getting in some practice with a sword. And, for once, he was actually there without any nagging from Snarf.

"I am Lion-o," he said, "and while I've fought with a sword from time to time, the Sword of Omens tends to do a lot of the fighting for me. I'm hoping to gain some new skills that don't depend on having a magical sword available."

Emma hadn't yet gone to the mainland to replace her former training sword that she'd left behind in Boston, so she was looking at the practice weapons with interest.

Ellie was there, though she was looking over at the practice swords with apprehension.

Monday was turning into a busy day for Azula but it may well be what the doctor prescribed. She needed something, a lot of somethings after that mortifying class.

"My name's Ellie," she said, looking around at everyone. "I don't have much experience at all, so total beginner here. But I guess everyone has to start somewhere."

"Frost, darlings, Emma Frost," she drawled with a smirk. "I took fencing class at my last school, but I'm afraid I've been rather delinquent in keeping up with my skills." For, oh, the last year or so.

"If you're used to the movements that come with fighting with a sword, you'll find it easy enough to pick up standard moves with practice."

"No promises on you being a swashbuckler by the end of the year," Edmund replied lightly, "but we'll get a start on it."

"Would you consider yourself skilled enough to hold your own in a controlled match or still in the learning stages?"

"Azula, Princess of the Fire Nation," she said, beginning with her standard introduction. "I'm versed in the Dao and the Jian swords but I'm far more proficient in hand-to-hand combat. Also, I'm here because I was promised a lesson on Arming swords."

Zayne was pretty happy with the setup of this club. Even though sword training wasn't exactly equal to lightsaber training, it was close. And this meant that he was continuing his tour of Fandom's sword experts, so hopefully he'd develop SOME extra dueling skills.

Anyway, this all meant Zayne was in a good mood.

Dinah headed straight for the swords, and picked out her practice blade. Just in case anyone else was going to like it too. Then looked around at the rest of the students, trying to rein in her anticipation.

"Dinah Lance, and I've been studying swordwork with Arthur for going on eight months now, and eskrima sticks and staff for two years," Dinah said, adding, "I just started learning shield work. And I'd love to learn as many weapons as possible."

"I'm Zayne Carrick and I've had training with a lightsaber and have taken a few sword classes here in Fandom," Zayne said. "My skill level isn't really as high as I hoped it would be with all of that, but I'm working on it."

Emma's chin went up slightly. "I can hold my own in a controlled match."

She'd cheat like a telepathic-cheating-thing, until her body remembered what it was doing. Then she'd cheat a little less.

"Hey Zayne." Dinah gave a small wave when she saw him, trying to remember if they'd talked... oh, in a while. Since the last time they were in the salle. Probably not. Ignore the pinkness, okay? "Lightsaber practice?"

"Hey, Dinah," Zayne said, giving a friendly smile. "Yeah. I figure the best way to actually get better is to get as much sword instruction as possible."

It was a working theory. "How about you? I didn't know you were interested in swords."

Edmund mentally sorted Emma into the intermediate category. Being a gentleman, he even managed to keep his eyes on her face. It kinda helped that he was internally flailing about having to lead mostly girls. "Then your footwork is stable, if slightly out of practice?"

"All in due time," he promised.

"Oh, yeah. Weekly practices with Arthur since a month after I got here," Dinah confirmed. "I figured eventually there would be something here that only swords were good for. I wasn't good enough to use one on the harpies or alligators, but still. Another eight months 'til graduation." She grinned. "Plus they're just cool."
