The Club Fair - Gym - Friday Afternoon

Today was the day of the club fair! Wasn't it just so exciting?!

Jean was totally excited.

So excited, in fact, that she showed up early to find it just as everything was being set up like the little overachiever she was. Maybe she'd be able to swing voters here!

Oh look! The club schedule! This was going to be so great, right everyone?!

"What does that even mean?" Karla asked. "So far, there hasn't been a single good reason to keep females excluded."

"He means," Arthur interjected, putting his chips aside to lean that away, "That we drink, fight in contests of skill, eat large quantities of meat, compare stories of the hunts we've been on and the fights we've won, and discuss challenges equal in valour, fortitude and courage up ahead. Does that satisfy you, Karla?"

"Not really," Karla shot back, irked a little because it was Arthur, though pleased at last to have gotten a real answer. "Because I can do all of those things, too. And while I will concede that I can't hope to match you in a contest of physical skill, I'm certain that I can outdrink you. And possibly outeat you as well."

Yes, skinny little Karla just threw out that challenge.

"In," Arthur continued, untouched, "The spirit of brotherhood. These are not circumstances for women."

Karla rolled her eyes. "Arthur, your ideas of 'circumstances for females' involve embroidery and babies. Both of which are stupid and boring."

"Were you born a woman?" Arthur checked.

"And if I said no?" Karla quipped.

"I would throw you out for lying to me," Arthur said, pleasantly. "This group is not for you; find one that is. There's plenty to go for yet. We're finished here."

"Throw me out of what?" Karla said, a hint of a taunt in her voice. "The club? You won't let me in anyway. The gym? I'd like to see you try."

Well, of course Merlin was nearby. He was Arthur's ~~manservant~~ ~~stalker~~ ~~quasi-boyfriend~~ manservant after all.

"Karla."

"Merlin," Karla said politely. "It's nice to see you."

"Here I thought I was the one you were after," He teased lightly.

"I'm implementing a new plan," she said airily. "The frontal assault was getting me nowhere. I'm hoping jealousy will make you mine." She laughed. "Though, truly, I have no idea how you're withstanding my charms in the first place."

"I can assure you, it's taking all my willpower to not simply pull you into a cupboard and have my way with you," Merlin replied in the very same tone. "But then, we would need to fear for Francine's wrath."

Yes, terrifying Francine.

"If you joined the fraternity, how would we survive, my lady?"

Oh, for the love of God.

Somewhere in the background, Arthur rolled his eyes, but pointedly went about his business.

That got another laugh out of her. "I didn't see you as the dragging-to-the-cupboard type. Now I must clearly redouble my efforts," she grinned.

"And besides, in the fraternity, we'd be too busy doing guy things." She dropped her voice to a whisper. "Have you see the sorority? They put on makeup! Makeup!"

"...makeup?" Merlin leaned in to keep the conversation private. "Is that a bad thing?"

Merlin lacked any experience in this outside of Francine. There was a very thoughtful pause.

"Does Francine wear makeup?"

"It's boring and kind of girly," Karla said bluntly. "I'm not good at it and I don't really want to take the time to learn."

At his question about Francine, Karla just blinked. "...I dunno? Maybe?"

"Huh. Well, I think you look lovely without."

Which might have been the gayest thing he'd ever said.

Oh, Merlin, that probably isn't true.

"Flatterer," Karla said cheerfully. "I'm not all that pretty. Too pale and too skinny. I don't really mind, though. But that's part of the reason I think makeup is stupid. What's the point?"

Oh, Karla knew she could be pretty sometimes (like after the play on Tuesday night), she just thought it was an occasional, random happenstance. She really was okay about it though.

...Karla was a weird girl.

...maybe it is.

"If you're skinny and pale, I may be too thin to exist," Merlin pointed out.

Of course, he was fond of a woman with meat on her bones. Mmmm, chubby-chaser.

"I fully believe the only reason you survive is because Francine is constantly feeding you. I worry if she ever goes on a trip and leaves you behind," she teased.

"I do keep her safe from the evils of biscuits. Oh! And she rather liked the ones we made!"

She ate a whole one!

"She did?!" Karla asked happily. "That's excellent. Maybe we could make her more, some time?"

Without setting fire to anything?

"She offered to help next time as well." Which may help with the fire problem.
