The Club Fair - Gym - Friday Afternoon

Today was the day of the club fair! Wasn't it just so exciting?!

Jean was totally excited.

So excited, in fact, that she showed up early to find it just as everything was being set up like the little overachiever she was. Maybe she'd be able to swing voters here!

Oh look! The club schedule! This was going to be so great, right everyone?!

Mat looked profoundly disappointed. "Burn me! Why not?"

"Because I don't play for coin," Arthur said, steadily. "And if anything, we should be learning these games in case the teachers attempt to face us in them."

"Why would the bloody teachers want to play us in cards?" Mat asked. "And why don't you play for coin?" He grinned. "It's because you'd lose, isn't it?"

"Last term, a teacher attempted to face me in cards over his ill-considered need to put all the men in dresses," Arthur informed him, "And as I said, I don't find gambling honourable. Least of all for hard-won gold, either mine, or that of anyone else."

... Arthur's whole touchstone for hanging out with guys who could gamble was, uh, knights.

Mat snorted. "I'm sure you'd look lovely in a bloody dress," he said. "And I'm not going to bloody throw dice with a farmer for his last copper, but lordlings with more money than sense? Burn me, that's fair game."

... Oh, right, now it was on. "Good luck finding any of those," Arthur returned, "I'm sure you can find a few lying about. Didn't know you were in the market."

"Well, if I'd known there was an assembly like this, I would have made a sign," Mat shot back. "I know all the idiots back home." He gave Arthur a slightly dark look. "I'm still learning them here."

"Don't worry, it won't take you long," Arthur said, jabbing his thumb agreeably towards his 'co-leader'.

"He doesn't look like a rich lord," Mat said, tilting his head appraisingly.

"No, but he's an idiot, so it's a good place to start."

Mat's smile turned positively predatory. "Think he tosses dice?"

"He may well, if you challenge him."

...Now, Arthur, that's mean.

"But you're above that sort of thing," Mat replied.

"I'm above a lot of things."

"Oh, of course," Mat said, fairly dripping sarcasm. "Let me guess. You have a title."

"It didn't take you long," Arthur granted him, idly, letting the sarcasm bounce off him. "I'm impressed."

"Unlike jumped up little lordlings, I have a brain and bloody use it every now and then," Mat informed him.

Rarely, if you asked most of the women who knew him.

"Do you, now?" Arthur asked, raising his eyebrows. "Considering that you're, if I'm to take your rambling to heart, currently implying that I'm some kind of idiot, I'd imagine that it is currently lying in disuse."

"You haven't bloody impressed me," Mat retorted. "Was there a point where it was supposed to?"

"Oh, no," Arthur said, sipping his drink. Which he had entirely impressed Hannibal into getting him. "If I was trying, you would have noticed. I just haven't found a reason to bother."

It was like talking with the lords of bloody Tear. Mat rolled his eyes. "I wouldn't want you to strain yourself, my lord," he replied.

"How noble of you," Arthur said, casting a look down at their set-up (and casting the whole argument over his shoulder, because he was obviously above it). "If you're willing, you can sign up, take some drink, and go."

"I'd hate to waste any of more of my bloody lord's bloody precious time," Mat replied, scrawling his name down onto the sheet of paper and then reaching out to snag Arthur's cup.

"I'm not a lord," Arthur said, nimbly yanking that cup out of the way. "Prince, actually. The bottle's just down there. Do tell Hannibal I said hi."

"Of course you bloody are," Mat said. He and Elayne were cut from the same bloody cloth.

...whatever this man's name was.

He spun on his heel, turned and gave Arthur what might go on record as the most sarcastic bow ever performed, and stalked toward Hannibal.
