Studio Art, Friday, Period Four, Week One

"Good afternoon," Steve said to his students once they'd taken their places at the tables. "I'm Mr. Rogers, and this is Studio Art. Not Art 101, so if you're signed up for that one, but not this one, you're in the wrong place. And you've probably missed the first meeting of your class. Sorry. But if you are in the right place, great! We're going to have a lot of fun this semester experimenting with different media and styles. Media is a technical way of saying 'the stuff you make the art out of.'

"But before we do that, you have to introduce yourselves to everyone one last time," he continued cheerily. "I'd like everyone to tell the class your name, year, and what you'd like to work with and learn more about in this class. Then we'll get right into it with some supplies some of you are probably at least passingly familiar with: crayons and coloring books. Sound good? Good."

"We'll start with, mmm, you," Steve said, pointing to a student at random.

"Hi! I'm Jean Grey and I'm a senior. I'd just like to learn about art, really."

Oh, it was sickeningly cheerful and sincere.

"Hi, Jean," Steve said ~~resisting the urge to wrap her in bubble wrap~~. "I hope you'll learn some things along the way. It may mostly be learning through doing, though. Do you have any previous experience making art?"

"Not unless you count finger painting back in grade school"

"Angela Montenegro," she introduced, so used to these little intros now. "I'm a senior, and I am all for almost any kind of art so... Really not fussy."

"I like not fussy," Steve said with a grin. "Welcome to the class."

"Anemone, senior," and that was never not going to be weird, "and I like working with crayons or chalk."

"Then you should be happy this week," Steve said, indicating the giant boxes of crayons.

"I'm Alex Russo and I'm a junior," she stated, smiling lightly. "I like working with pastels and paint, in general."

"Hi, Alex," Steve said. "Nice to have you in class. We'll get to those in due time," he promised.

Alex remembered taking the arts & crafts workshop with Professor Rogers last summer. That had been a blast and she was fairly certain this would be, too.

"Looking forward to it," she grinned.

"Parker, sophmore, I like to draw," Parker answered all in the same level tone.

Maybe she was a robot? "Nice to meet you, Parker. Do you have an opinion on crayons?"

"They're... waxy," Parker said after a moment, then in a quick rush, "I like the orange ones."

"Shilo Wallace, junior, and I like working with charcoals."

"I'm, uh, Cal Stephanides." What? Cute redhead was in this class; it made him feel a little nervous and shy, wanting to hide again in his long hair. Redheads had that effect on him. "I'm a junior. I like just sketching best, I think, and photography, although I'm kind of more a writer than an artist."

"There's a box of crayons for everyone, and if you don't like either of the coloring book choices, I have some plain drawing paper," Steve said. "By the way, the crayons are yours to keep. You never know when a giant box of crayons will come in handy. And I don't mind if you talk while you're working, by the way. Talk about what you're doing, ask each other for help, whatever. Collaboration is good. If things start getting rowdy I'll step in, though." Yes, he said rowdy.

Alex snagged crayons and a coloring book, tempted to take some drawing paper too. She settled in, all ready enjoying this class immensely.

Oh, the memories this brought back. Shilo grabbed a coloring book and her box of crayons, and fought the urge to color outside of the lines on purpose.

Steve was messing around with his own giant box of crayons and one of his sketchpads. They brought back fond memories, even if his childhood box of crayons had been eight colors he'd long since worn down to little nubs by the time the next Christmas brought a new one.

Honestly, there were more shades of blue in here than in the box of paints back at his apartment.

I pretty much just have to use this icon wherever I can, for lo, it is the best icon ever.

Steve doesn't have a TA, so if anyone wants the job just ping into the 'Talk to the Teacher' thread and let me know that's what you're after, and we'll get it set up.

*burninates all the Nazis*
