Oceanography [Thursday, Week 1, Period Five]

It was safe to say Summer was a bit nervous. Sure, she’d faced life and death situations and come out (mostly) unscathed but a classroom full of teenagers? That was enough cause to send just about anyone running for the hills.

Summer took a deep breath, not about to be dismayed. Once the last student settled in, she hopped off the desk she’d been sitting on. “Welcome everyone,” she began, a bright smile appearing on her face. “My name’s Summer Pitt and this is Oceanography.”

She paused, waiting to see if anyone had mistaken this for another class. When no one stood up to leave, she continued. “Since it’s the first day, I figure we can start off easy. Why don’t we go around the room and start with introductions? How about your name, grade, where you are from and something you’ve always wanted to know pertaining to the ocean. I’ll do my best to try and touch upon them as we go along.”

Summer decided she’d be the first to share some information about herself with her students. “I’m originally from California but I’ve been living in Washington D.C. for the past few years.” How she came to be there was quite a story. “I got into oceanography because of my parents. I’ve always wanted to know more about famous shipwrecks that occurred in history.”

Picking a student at random, Summer gestured in their direction. “Why don’t you start?”

Once the introductions were completed, Summer passed out the syllabus. “If anything changes, I’ll be sure to give you all an updated copy,” she added. “I’m also looking for a couple of T.A.’s, so if anyone’s interested, please see me after class.”

Having said that, Summer pulled up some slides that touched briefly on the subject and what they’d cover in the upcoming weeks. It was the first day after all, so she kept it short. No need to tire the students out on the first day.

[OOC: Syllabus | Class Roster. Have one TA chosen, if anyone else wants to volunteer for the second spot. Otherwise, we'll just go with one TA.]

Leto listened to the lecture. He had chosen this class in order to learn more about the sea and perhaps overcome some of the uneasiness he felt about large bodies of water.

Joan thought this class and teacher seemed very, very normal. Which was kind of abnormal around here.

Maron was relieved that, at least, this class seemed less stressful than her Ethics class had been.

Smiling slightly, she rested her chin in one hand and listened.

This was possibly the most normal class Anemone had ever taken here, aside from cooking, and she was humming happily under her breath as she doodled fish in the margins of her notebook.

"Leto Atreides from the planet of Arrakis," he began. "I'm a senior. And I'm not sure there is anything I truly wanted to know about the ocean. My home world is all desert, and the sea isn't something I'm used to. But If I'm to name something, it would be what can be found in the darkest depths of the ocean."

"My name is Joan Girardi. I'm a senior and I'm from Maryland. I've spent a lot of time at the shore so I'm curious to learn more about the ocean in general," Joan said.

"I'm Maron Kusakabe," she said, sticking with the American order for her name. "And Tokyo, Japan is where I'm from. I'm a sophomore, and I've always wanted to know more about why, under the ocean, there's so many colors to the creatures." That sounded silly, didn't it? She looked a bit sheepish as she finished. "Is it all for saying they're poisonous?"

"I'm Anemone -- like the flower, actually, not the fishie -- and a senior," she began, clasping her hands behind her back and rocking back on her heels. "And I'm here because we didn't have oceans until recently where I'm from, so I want to learn about it and take that back home with me after graduation."

"I'm Leda, a junior from Bordertown and..." What? Her parents had signed her up for this. She'd never given the ocean a second thought before coming here. "Are there really sea monsters?"

"Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis," Joolushko said. "I am a junior. I know very little of your planet's oceans, so I suppose I'd like to know everything."

"I'm Edmund Pevensie," he introduced himself. "Junior class. From Narnia. I'd like to learn anything relating to the ocean that could be of practical use."

Cal actually was a card carrying member of the Save the Manatee Foundation, which he felt made for pretty good qualifications for this. Plus, he figured why the hell not? The teacher was kind of hit and how hard could TAing be anyway?

"Hey, you said you were looking for TAs?"
