Adventures in Literature, Wednesday, Period Three [Class One]

Drake wanted to make a dramatic entrance for his first official class. He was also running late, so shimmering was perfectly acceptable. One minute there was no one standing in the front of the classroom; the next Drake appeared, wearing the black robes of a professor over a suit and tie. Rubbing his hands together, he said, "Fresh young minds to corrupt. I mean teach. Did I say that out loud? Never mind. Anyway, I am Professor Dèmon, and this is Adventures in Literature. Now, I want each of you to introduce yourselves and tell me why you're taking this class."

He waited as each student made their introduction, nodding thoughtfully. When the last had finished, rolled his eyes and snapped his fingers, vanishing the black robes and revealing that the "suit" was nothing but a false shirt front. He yanked the dickey off and tossed it aside, now wearing just jeans and a t-shirt. "Now that we have that boring part over," he said, moving in front of his desk and hopping up to sit on the edge, "I want you to tell me what your favorite work of literature is. What story ignites your passion? What tale makes your blood start pumping? Why do you love it?" He leaned forward, very interested in what each student had to say.

Class was almost over by the time the last student finished. "Next week we'll start to dive into some classic works," Drake said. "We'll start with the legend of Robin Hood. I have it on good authority that the vice principal is actually the Sheriff of Nottingham, so we may have to do something about that. Oh, and you don't have to call me Professor Dèmon. Way too stuffy. You can call me Drake, or if you're slightly more daring, O Captain my Captain." He grinned. "Saw that in a movie once. I always wanted to say that."

"It's hard for me to pick a favorite," Eleanor spoke up, "but I find meta for, if it even needs a meta Utopia an interesting read. The workings of society and politics described are quite insightful, I think."

"I'm a little bit partial to Homer's work," Gabrielle admitted. "Personal bias. He's a friend of mine."

"I'm a fan of Moby Dick because I can use it to sneak adult jokes past the censors," Yakko said with some pride.

"I don't know if I can pick one favorite, but I really love the Disney version of meta The Little Mermaid," Didi said. "I know it bugs some people that they changed the ending, but I don't see why she has to give up her soul and everything."

"I like romance novels," Sookie admitted, biting her lip. "I mean, the real trashy ones. But I read a lot of Jane Austen's stuff and loved it to bits, even if I had to look up the words and it was all really stiff and no one really said what they were thinking. I mean, that's kind of why I liked 'em."

"I'm a fan of Paradise Lost," Emma confessed. "I enjoy the language, and I find Milton's take on the topic fascinating."

"I like romance novels too," Francine felt a little less ashamed to say after hearing it from Sookie, "But my favorite book is probably... The Princess Bride? There's romance and buttkicking."

"I like Shakespeare," she said carefully. Then again, her copies had had every mention of the supernatural, mythological, religious, and not-strictly-fact-based stricken from it, so whether she'd really read it or not is up to others.

"And some of the morality plays from the 13th century."

...yeah, her options for books had been a little tight.

"I don't have a particular favorite," Ellie said after a moment of thought. "But I have always liked Charlotte's Web.

Even if it made her cry.

"I should probably stick to genre rather than actual titles," Karla said, a little hesitant. "Mostly since my favorite works of literature are from Kaeleer. But I like just about everything: fables, histories, romances."

Yeah, Karla turned a little pink on that one.

"I don't think I could ever pick a favorite. Right now, I'm liking the books about meta for Sherlock Holmes. I like smart mysteries, where you don't always figure out who committed a crime before the end of the book."
