Infantry Tactics [Wednesday Second Period]

"Good morning," his voice boomed. "Some of you may have taken a course with me before, and that's nice. Some of you may have met me in some other venue, and that's nice. But whatever you think you know, is wrong. When you are in my classroom there is precisely one correct way to refer to me, and that is Centurion. It is my rank, and it is a sign that I know more than any of you are likely to learn about the fine art of killing men on a battlfield." His eyes narrowed. "If any of you refers to me inappropriately... well, let's just say that things will get ugly."

"I understand that some of you may have formidable skills you think may make things easy for you here. Let me assure you that you do not. Some of you may be excellent fighters, or even warriors, but that doesn't make you soldiers. This class will shape you into soldiers, and soldiers understand tactics in a way no mere warrior can. So forget what you think you know."

"This course is divided into two parts. The first part will be focused on what are called regular infantry forces, and the second will be focused on irregular infantry forces. If any of you have military training, it is likely as irregulars. I will discuss that in more detail when the time comes. For now we will focus on regular infantry forces, and that means you must all understand the first and most important lesson: your job is to follow orders and protect your teammates. Your job is not to kill the enemy. Your job is not to be a brilliant fighter. Your job is not to be brave and heroic. You will follow orders and keep your teammates alive. That is all."

"Soldiers are professionals. The work you do is scientific, and you will learn to do it properly. Or," and here Max paused to grin evilly, "I will be glad to provide supplemental instruction."

"The reason regular infantry forces are called 'regulars' at all is that each of you has the same job to do. If any one of you falls then each of the others can take their place. It will not matter where in a formation you stand, or who you stand with, because you are trained as a regular you will know how to do your job." Not that Max would ever call them all 'cogs in a machine', but that was very much what he was trying to convey.

"That is all I intend to say today, and that leaves us with some time in this period." Max's cruel smile was back as he flipped some switch and the Danger Room reconfigured itself into a running track. "And that means we can get in some running today."

"Now run! Don't dawdle! You can stop to breathe when the period ends!"

This was the one class she was allowed to have. She knew all about the Fire Nation infantry but it would serve her well to gain perspective from another point of view.

Max had Ino's utterly undivided attention.

This was the sort of class she was used to and it made her gleeful even as she sat straight in her chair riveted.

Gwynn was fascinated and couldn't wait to see what all she could learn from Max.

Fiona was glad that Max seemed to be a bit more professional this time around. She wasn't sure if it was the topic or the fact that he'd been teaching longer, but she approved.

Anemone was more of a special operative than an infantry grunt -- and she'd commanded more than a few disposable KLF pilots -- but she didn't mind the re-designation, especially since his infantry sounded a bit more professional (and capable) than the usual UF Force meatpuppets.

Still, she was needing to repress the ingrained impulse to bristle at any orders coming from someone that she didn't know. It wasn't that she actually had issues with what he was saying, just... Anemone did not Deal Well with male authority figures sometimes. Although she really was doing her best to pay attention, and not fidget or make faces.

Momoko had no problem calling Centurion 'Centurion'. She was used to calling people by their titles back home, so it made perfect sense to her.

What didn't make sense to her was why they had to all be the same. That wasn't what being a hero was all about, and she was a hero! But she decided to wait and see if maybe the hero part was in the irregular part of the class. After all, just because she learned it, didn't mean she had to use it (look at Algebra!) and while she didn't like the idea of following orders rather than being the leader, she did like that this was a protect-don't-kill class. Finally!

Azula kept pace no problem. She'd ran harder courses before.

Yeah, okay, whatever. She'd kind of figured there'd be running of some kind at some point. Besides, it was exercise.

She took a moment to find her pace before settling into it.

Oh, please. She'd run for days on a mission. This was seriously no problem. Ino modulated her pace enough that she wouldn't stick out by being super fast (years of training plus strong legs did that to you, even without chakra boosting her speed) and revelled in running. Arms down and to the back, of course, but that was her training coming in.

It was days like this that Anemone missed playing tag with Cassandra.

She pulled up alongside Ino, reaching out to tap the other girl's wrist playfully. "You're it," she teased, sticking out her tongue before taking off again. She knew perfectly well that Ino could totally catch her without even trying, but this was still fun.

Re: During the run

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-09-02 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh oh it was on!

Ino laughed and picked up her pace. "You better make it a challenge," she carolled, racing to catch up and easily starting to close the gap. "It's more fun that way!"

Re: During the run

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's just a flat-track!" she sulked, picking up the pace and starting to weave around their classmates a bit, to make it harder for Ino to tag her. "It's not like we've got anything fun to play with."
intraspective: (already crazy!)

Re: During the run

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-09-02 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"We need an obstacle course!" she said, sticking to the game, and weaving after her. Sure, Ino could catch up no problem, but that'd be boooring. Even if she was gaining on her anyway. "Real infantry don't have nice flat surfaces! They'd have, like, hills and rocks and people trying to kill them!"

That'd be an awesome obstacle course.

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"I always enjoyed 'Don't Step on the Stupid Civilian' when I was working," Anemone admitted. It made sense, when you drove a three-story tall mecha, and had screaming humans running around underfoot. Sometimes people got squashed! "But I've never been actual infantry. Is it fun? It sounds like fun."
intraspective: (running from you)

Re: During the run

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-09-02 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That seriously shouldn't have been as funny as it totally was to her.

"I don't know," Ino admitted, laughing. "I'm more of an irregular, I think. We don't even have infantry back home going by his definitions. We don't fight standard wars!"

A burst of speed and she reached out to to tap Anemone. "Tag!" Which, of course, meant that she had to speed up further and get ahead. "Catch me if you can!"

Re: During the run

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Anemone let out a whoop of glee and lengthened her stride, silently thankful for her long legs.

"We had both an air and a ground infantry, but I almost never worked with them," she called back, settling into a faster pace. "But we do have wars. Lots of wars. I don't think there's ever not been a war."

Re: During the run

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-09-02 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ino was content enough to race ahead of her, still not even breathing hard, and tossed her response over her shoulder.

"We hit a record, I think, of ten years peace! It's falling apart now though," she had to laugh at that, "can't be too upset--if it was always peaceful I'd be out of a job!"

Seriously, there were only so many dogs they could walk.

"How does air infantry work?"

Re: During the run

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2009-09-02 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"They give me minions, that's how it works!" One, two, three, and Anemone's legs coiled under her, letting her leap forward with the enhanced agility that was part of the hybrid package.

She landed near to Ino, hitting the ground in a roll before she was up and running again. "Picture giant flying robots. We still have a front line, even if we're working in more dimensions and with different concepts of movement than people constrained by gravity."

intraspective: (listen to meeee)

Re: During the run

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-09-02 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ino laughed.

"Nice jump!" she cried, skittering sideways and moving faster. Anemone could jump but Ino was pretty sure she could out-run the other girl any day of the week. And the speed gave her something to focus on other than doing a flip or anything fancy just to show she could. "Minions sound awesome! And--giant flying robots? You fly one, huh?"

Gwynn was pretty cheerful as they started running. Considering how much she loved running and climbing things, this was the perfect class for her.

Running! Her only sad thought was that Eliot wasn't here to run again. She didn't make it a competition, but she certainly seemed to enjoy herself.

Re: During the run

[personal profile] heromaniac 2009-09-03 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Momoko kept pace as long, as it wasn't too fast. Despite the benefit of enhanced strength didn't mean she liked running, so she was hanging in the middle of the group. She also spent some time trying to remember if this was the third or fourth class where she'd had to run laps?

Running to kill time at the end of a class? Lame. But Danny did so, mostly keeping to himself and staying towards the front part of the pack.
