Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #1

When the students got to class, they'd find a young woman, dressed in black, watching everyone as they took their seats as if assessing her assignment. Or maybe she was wondering what she'd gotten herself into. Either one.

"Welcome to class. This is Fandom vs. The Real World. If you are not supposed to be in this class, now would be the time to leave. No one probably knows your name yet to think badly of you.

"My name is Aeryn Sun," she introduced herself. "To give you a bit of background, I was one of the first students at this school, and therefore you will get no pity from me. We had to learn about bites and invasions and people getting possessed all on our own." They also had to walk two miles uphill in the snow. Each way. "And if any of you are feeling alarmed by anything I just said, oh, just wait. I should probably also tell you straight off that I am not human. I'm Sebacean, and till a few cycles back, was a member of the Peacekeeper military. I was here for two years before I graduated, and there was never a dull moment. This is both a blessing and a curse. Since graduating, I've been living in Cambridge with my family, and in case you're one of the people not from here originally, it's quite a bit different out there than it is in Fandom. I'm sure those of you from a 'normal' place have already noticed this.

"I don't know yet how many of you are brand new to Fandom, and if you've been around a while, bear with me while I explain a few things to the new students. You're probably figuring out by now that the things you've been hearing since Saturday is true. Most of it. I'm sure people slip at least one or two untrue things in. Regardless, this is a unique place, and since I'm assuming none of you have tried to run screaming yet, I'll take it for granted that you're here for a while, and hopefully we can make the transition a bit easier.

"On the other hand, when you're used to being from someplace where this sort of thing is normal, where you're used to different species wandering around, where portals don't faze you and you're perfectly at ease flying a ship when the locals don't drive anything that leaves the ground. At times, you will venture out into that world. There are field trips, or you may pay a visit to a friend's home, and at that point, the things that are perfectly normal here suddenly have nearly no basis there. We will cover that, too. Because going out into that with no knowledge is frelling hard. Wherever you come from, it's all right to find it abnormal, or maybe even a little scary at first. You're just going to have to get over it.

"Rather than barrage you with too much information, we're going to start with the continued introductions you'll be sick of by the end of the week," said Aeryn. "I want you each to tell me your name, where and when you're from, and the strangest thing you've heard or experienced since you've been here. You first."

"My name is Mat Cauthon," Mat began, "and I hail from the Two Rivers, the land that was once called Manetheren."

Before the hordes of Trollocs had crushed it several thousand years ago, Manetheren had been a thorn in the Dark One's side and a bramble in his foot.

He adjusted the black silk scarf around his neck. "And I think the strangest thing I've encountered--other than the blue deer in the wood--was having my weapons taken from me."

Not that he didn't still have a knife in his boot, of course.

Raven gave the new boy a shy smile. "I fear you will soon see many things much stranger than that," she said.

Ooooh, cute new girl. Mat smiled charmingly at her. "Do you have examples?" he asked.

Raven swooned blushed. Cute boy smiling at her! "I know it sounds insane," she said, "but things like pastries falling from the sky, people bursting into song against their will, books and other objects coming to life. You become more used to it in time."

"That's been happening before I came, right?" Mat asked quickly.

An unwelcome memory of playing cards coming to life and trying to kill him flashed through his mind.

"It has been happening as long as I have been here, since the summer began," Raven said. She decided not to mention the boys turning into girls because that might freak him out a bit too much and he already seemed anxious enough. "And long before that, I am told. Most of the time it is harmless, merely inconvenient or an annoyance. Sometimes it may be more dangerous, but there are those who train to protect the island against such things. I am not one of those; I am a healer, not a warrior."

Oh, Mat had heard about the genderswapping from Zayne. He now believed his roommate to be a mad crossdresser.

He smiled at Raven. "I'm sure you're very good at it," he said. "I've met my share of healers, and you're definitely one of the prettiest."

Oh, that just made her cheeks turn even more pink. "I am very skilled with my gifts. I have yet to find a wound I could not heal," she murmured, as close to a boast as she could get. "I am Raven," she added. You know, just in case he hadn't heard her when she introduced herself to the class two minutes earlier.

"Do they think we're going to go around stabbing each other?" Mat asked, then held up a finger. "Wait. Are there people here who deserve to be stabbed?"

At that last, Illyria gave him a curt nod. "Most unacceptable."

"I don't need any weapons but my own hands." She'd have said that anyway, even if it wasn't true, of course. "But I enjoy them."

"The liquid gurgles of pain when they enter the skin are pleasant," she agreed. For the definition of agreement that runs Clearly I am right and no one would be so stupid as to dis-agree.

Why yes, she and Arthur Pendragon were going to get along famously when they met.

Well, he had, but he certainly hadn't found it pleasant.

"I prefer to act." But thought was, for many of the things she'd prefer to act on, the only option she had, no matter how poor.

They took away Azula's bladed weapons too but since the deadliest arsenal she had was herself she wasn't that put out.

"If losing weapons bother you, you should take more effort in your skill in hand-to-hand combat."

"I'd rather be somewhere where someone isn't trying to poke holes in me," Mat replied. "It's just...not what I'm used to."

At home, someone was always trying to poke holes into him. He was linked to the Dragon Reborn. Taking him out of the equation was useful for any number of plans.

"I don't want to be a fighter," Mat replied. "I'm a gambler. A dancer."

...A general. He didn't mention that part.

The general thing would have probably be the welcome part.

Azula rolled her eyes, "All useless occupations."

You're trying to be nice, remember?

"Exactly," Mat said happily. "Leave it to Rand and Perrin to be the lords and fulfillment of bloody prophecy. I'll be here, not having my head on a bloody pike."
