Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #1

When the students got to class, they'd find a young woman, dressed in black, watching everyone as they took their seats as if assessing her assignment. Or maybe she was wondering what she'd gotten herself into. Either one.

"Welcome to class. This is Fandom vs. The Real World. If you are not supposed to be in this class, now would be the time to leave. No one probably knows your name yet to think badly of you.

"My name is Aeryn Sun," she introduced herself. "To give you a bit of background, I was one of the first students at this school, and therefore you will get no pity from me. We had to learn about bites and invasions and people getting possessed all on our own." They also had to walk two miles uphill in the snow. Each way. "And if any of you are feeling alarmed by anything I just said, oh, just wait. I should probably also tell you straight off that I am not human. I'm Sebacean, and till a few cycles back, was a member of the Peacekeeper military. I was here for two years before I graduated, and there was never a dull moment. This is both a blessing and a curse. Since graduating, I've been living in Cambridge with my family, and in case you're one of the people not from here originally, it's quite a bit different out there than it is in Fandom. I'm sure those of you from a 'normal' place have already noticed this.

"I don't know yet how many of you are brand new to Fandom, and if you've been around a while, bear with me while I explain a few things to the new students. You're probably figuring out by now that the things you've been hearing since Saturday is true. Most of it. I'm sure people slip at least one or two untrue things in. Regardless, this is a unique place, and since I'm assuming none of you have tried to run screaming yet, I'll take it for granted that you're here for a while, and hopefully we can make the transition a bit easier.

"On the other hand, when you're used to being from someplace where this sort of thing is normal, where you're used to different species wandering around, where portals don't faze you and you're perfectly at ease flying a ship when the locals don't drive anything that leaves the ground. At times, you will venture out into that world. There are field trips, or you may pay a visit to a friend's home, and at that point, the things that are perfectly normal here suddenly have nearly no basis there. We will cover that, too. Because going out into that with no knowledge is frelling hard. Wherever you come from, it's all right to find it abnormal, or maybe even a little scary at first. You're just going to have to get over it.

"Rather than barrage you with too much information, we're going to start with the continued introductions you'll be sick of by the end of the week," said Aeryn. "I want you each to tell me your name, where and when you're from, and the strangest thing you've heard or experienced since you've been here. You first."

Of the many off-putting miens she had in her arsenal, today Illyria chose to go with aloof and distrustful. "I am Illyria. I'm from the time before humanity slithered from the sludge in the place that you now call Los Angeles." She paused, for weird was either everything about this world, or nothing.

"The 'weirdest' thing I have experienced here is the number of humans who speak loudly and quickly as if desperately trying to impart information, yet their words have all the meaning of warthogs attempting to play a tune by varying the levels of their flatulence."

"You'll find a glare and a noncommittal grunt will do much to dismay such... flatulence," Worf suggested. "If they continue to prattle on, growl and march away."

The boy's appearance held neither surprise nor interest for Illyria when she neck-ratcheted her stare over to him -- sentient, neither human nor demonic was hardly a surprising condition to any species but humanity -- but his words and tone were a pleasant change.

"Your suggestion is superfluous but agreed upon," she said gruffly, but then added with an uncertainty that was only shameful in her head, "Would such an interaction be considered 'socialising?'"

Not that she'd been ordered to. Just... advised. Always, just advised.

"No," Worf said making a face. Socializing was never Worf's idea of fun. "At least not in human standards."

Illyria huffed an irritated sigh. "Disappointing. My ...people's... idea of socializing would be very different. Is there no form of interaction here that involves mutually-enjoyed carnage and destruction? Killing things?" After a moment, she added, "Things which aren't human," with a face just as pained as Worf's.

"My people are a warrior race," Worf said nodding... somewhat in understanding. "There isn't much place for discussion of... feelings. And the weather."

"...The weather?"

"Idle chatter," Worf grunted in agreement. "It serves no purpose."

"Then why do they do such things?"

"I have only live among humans. I did not say I completely understand them," Worf replied. "Or their sense of humor."

Illyria had one of those, herself. It was just a little difficult to detect most of the time. "My...sympathies."

"You have mine as well," Worf replied with a gruff sigh.

"I don't require them." Which was nothing like not appreciating them. Appearances, though, had to be maintained.

"Fine," Worf said with a grunt of disgust.

Illyria drew herself up. "I go where I please." Power-posturing, however, warred with the ever-present need to bitch about her situation. She inclined her head slightly. "This existence was not my choice; this place is... possibly useful."

Azula snorted, "You must know the Avatar."

That got her attention. "I am an avatar."

Sure. Aside from the whole 'god incarnated into human form by choice' thing that usually went with that term.

"Are you the spirit of the Earth reborn in human form?" Azula asked sweetly knowing the answer would probably be 'no'.

"Of the Earth?" Illyria tilted her head. "No. My domain was much more vast."

Re: Introductions

[identity profile] azuldragon.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That was impressive and yet Azula was compelled to press buttons.

"And what happened to that vast domains of yours?"

Illyria's eyes narrowed to icy slits. "Time," she said coldly.

Which had no effect on Azula at all.

"Perhaps," was all she would allow out loud, though it was nothing she hadn't thought herself, staring at chunks of fallen stone. "Or perhaps it takes both time and betrayal to fell a god."

Betrayal. Azula hid a wince and she's suddenly a little sympathetic. "Yes, I understand that."
