Oh, hey, a new semester! That meant Tyler was on time, actually put on a tie, and -- in honor of the early hour -- had a huge tank of coffee and stack of cups on a back table.

"Hi," he said as the class filed in, gesturing a little with the coffee mug that probably would not leave his hand in the next 15 classes. "Welcome to applied science. I'm Tyler Durden. Tyler works, Mr. Durden works ... not a big fan of 'hey you' in the classroom."

"Usually I make soap the first week, but this doesn't feel like a day for it." By which he meant he wasn't quite ready to repeat the class yet, and was saving it. "So today, we're talking about one of the most basic concepts in physics -- simple machines."

"Basically, a simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force -- the simplest mechanisms that use leverage to multiply force. A simple machine uses a single applied force to do work against a single load force. Ignoring friction losses, the work done on the load is equal to the work done by the applied force. They can be used to increase the amount of the output force, at the cost of a proportional decrease in the distance moved by the load. The ratio of the output to the input force is called the mechanical advantage."

"Six things are classically considered simple machines." He moved over to stand in front of a counter of such, holding each up as he talked. "The lever, like this hammer. The wheel and axle. The inclined plane, or ramp. The screw. The wedge. The pulley."

The lecture continued for a while, then: "Today we're going to introduce ourselves -- name, grade, and who you would fight if you could fight anyone, living, dead or imaginary -- then try to see how each of these simple machines are useful by trying to build something." He nodded to a student in the first row. "You first. And I need a TA or two." Not looking at Ino if she was there, there. "Talk to me during the introductions or after class if you're interested."

Righto. Introductions. Nobody had really had an outright problem with Jonothon's telepathy on Saturday at the picnic, but he wasn't holding his breath expecting it to go over without a hitch, here. Physical inability aside. But he had to introduce himself anyhow, so he might as well get it over with.

Of course, if he didn't look up at all while speaking, there was a fair chance people might not single him out too quickly, right?

Tyler flinched slightly and involuntarily at the voice in his head. He was never too fond of telepaths. Still. He supposed it wasn't the kid's fault, so he'd stay calm.

"Hi, Jonothon," he said. "Mind raising a hand? I couldn't tell where your voice was coming from."

Dinah jerked, blinked, and turned to look at the guy who was talking in her head, surprised. She stared for a second, puzzled, and then sent, Can you hear me? Because so far only Emma had managed that trick of projecting without Dinah having to be touching her.

Then she realized that if he couldn't, there was no way he'd comment on it. Duuuh. Or he might not because it was the middle of class.

That was interesting. Something to remember. Kid who smelt weird talked only in peoples' heads. Alright then.

"Liir Thropp," he started, glancing around to give himself room before he got to "Junior, oddly enough."

And no, he didn't think it needed explaining, why this was odd, but he wouldn't mind being asked. He just skipped on ahead.

"And who I would fight? Er."

Ask him who he'd see dead, that was simple enough. Who he'd be able to kill: that was a short list and one he knew well enough. But who he would fight?

...Liir had some issues with physical attack.

"Someone trying to kill me when I had absolutely no other option."

"I always get at least one pacifist," Tyler mused, though not disapprovingly. He didn't understand pacifists, but they generally stayed out of his way, and so it went. "Why is it weird that you're a junior?"

"Ino," she said dryly, because seriously, if he didn't know her name by now something was wrong and it wasn't with her. "Junior, fear it. And, I don't know. Does it really matter, Mr. Durden?"

"Not especially," Tyler said easily. He didn't understand why she was taking his class again -- seriously, she knew how to make nitroglycerin by now -- but he wasn't going to kick her out. "Welcome back, Ino."

"Dinah Lance, senior, and... Hmm." Wow, was there a long list. Also, half the people on her list could kick her ass, and was it smart to pick them for class? Plus she'd actually fought a couple people here, including the teacher, and okay, he didn't expect her to say him right?

Naaah. She was definitely overthinking this.

"Probably Poison Ivy, back home. Meta-criminal."

"I'm Ben Skywalker, and I'm a sophomore," Ben said with a tiny smile. "And I fight him every week, but I'd still fight my grandfather. I always learn something new."

Besides, fighting his dead cousin would make him sound insane.

"Ben," Tyler nodded. "Welcome to class. I see you both at fight club. You're catching up to him, huh?"

The kid wasn't better than Anakin, but few people were. For his age and build, he was more than good.

"Lion-o, Lord of the Thundercats," he stated, surprised at how well he'd adapted to the new title. "Sophomore. And I usually don't go seeking fights, but if I was fighting someone, it would probably be Slithe. He's usually the one who starts it."

Tyler was not going to stare at the cat-lion-Lord thing. He'd managed not to stare at the kid with the bandages who smelled funny, after all.

"Hi, Lion-o," he said, and glanced down at his fingers. "Slithe is an enemy at home?"

"Momoko Akatsutsumi! Junior!" Momoko popped up, extra bouncy for some odd reason. Nothing at all to do with the candy she'd been eating as she'd listened to the other students, really.

"And since I am a heroine of Justice, I fight evildoers whenever I'm needed! But there's no one in particular I would like to fight, sorry!" Oh! "Except maybe the other Blossom, but she's only in kindergarten and she has laser eyes, so it wouldn't be fair, right?"
