REPOST - Journalism Homework - Due October 21

Journalism Homework - All Classes

THIS IS A REPOST. The directions on the original post (see inside cut) was to have one person from each group start a thread and keep links to progress and projects inside the thread for their group so that Spider could track your progress. The comments of the first post more or less degenerated into other things, so please use the last post to find teammates if you must, but keep the comments in this one for actual posts regarding your project for the Professor. Thank you.

Long ago, in some of your universes anyway, there was a political push to get children to 'Just say no' to drugs.

Historical Information

One of our staff mentioned to me in passing that it would be a great deal more productive, perhaps, if the negative spin on today's political agendas were positive instead. It was further suggested that it would be far more interesting to run a campaign based on the slogan 'Just say yes' instead of the opposite.

Not to drugs, however. No. That's not how we do things here at Fandom High. *hypocritical cough*

Your assignment, due next week, is to produce a poster/propaganda campaign based on the idea of 'Just say yes'. Requirements are at least two posters, some sort of flyer, a spot in the student newspaper or the radio and at least one faculty endorsement of whatever it is that you are encouraging.

The school administration does not support exhorting your fellow students toward sex, drugs, alcohol or violence and there will be no skewing in that direction, unless you are pursuing a satirical slant on the assignment.

Groups of no more than four will be allowed and, as this is an exercise in teamwork, please try to work with someone new if at all possible. Grading will be based on reactions and discussions of your coursework, and non-contributing students will receive a failing grade. I will be the final judge of what constitutes 'contribution'.

You have until 10/21 to put your campaign together and make arrangements. I would prefer it if each group would elect someone whose responsibility it is to make a thread in the comments including links to any discussions and finished products and also links to any public postings. Your campaign should run 10/22 through 10/29.

As usual, combat journalism students get an automatic A if the finished project causes an argument and/or IC conflict once their efforts become public.

With many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sonofaparrotman for the ideas and motivation behind this assignment.

Please make a comment with the complete listing of everyone in your group when you make your initial post for your group in the comments below so that Spider will know how to grade. Please also remember the underlined portion above, as if he can't track your progress, he will fail you.

*grins* Unless we decide to make embarrassing posters of ourselves completely trashed, that probably won't be necessary. I'm thinking almost, like, autopsy-photo gross, you know?

For example: a 3 ft. by 4 ft. poster of diseased lung tissue with big block letters shouting "Say Yes To Tobacco!"

Or even of a guy missing half his face because he got cancer from chewing tobacco. That's pretty gross.

((Sorry, I do know Jayne loves his cigars -- and the Professor his cigarettes. :D))

*shudders*

I want to not see it, like, ever.

But I do think it's a great idea.

Who on the faculty would endorse it? I think House has the right sense of humor, if he counts.

Hmm. I've never met House, so I don't know. Do you want to go talk to him about it?

"Sure. It can't be any more embarassing than the last two times I saw him."

"Gah, finally here. Sorry I'm late. Anyway - I love the idea, and I have to go to the clinic at some point anyway, so I can talk to House if you guys want."

"Cool. I guess I could work on the newspaper ad, or go to the clinic with you." She looks at Rory, then drops her eyes to her desk. "I ended up doign that thing we were talking about on my own."

"Good to see you, by the way."

"You too!" Rory replies enthusiastically. "I got a car," she adds out of nowhere. "Oh, and how did that thing we talked about go? Who'd you end up talking to?"

"A car? Awesome."

"I talked to Dr. House. He was ... really nice, actually. I'll tell you about it later."

[OOC: Am going to wrap up my scene with Marty and then go to bed. Talk to you tomorrow.]
