Basic and Thaumaturgic Forensics - Wednesday, - 8/19

"Well, today's the last day of class and... to be perfectly frank, I can't really find it in my heart to test you on much of anything."

Mostly because, well, she was going to miss them. She'd sent the letter two days ago; by New Amsterdam post, it should reach Richard's office just before she did.

"What I would like to do is open things up for any of you to ask anything of me that you'd like, on any topic you might know I could speak to. If your question must be private, please feel free to come by Friday."

She glanced around the room and her smile was tight.

"I would like you to know that it has been a pleasure teaching you and that I wish you all the best of luck in the future."

Momoko liked the idea of no test, especially since she still didn't know how to do any of the magic parts of the class.

"I wonder if it's possible to learn magic if it doesn't exist in your home world," she mused. It wasn't her question, but it was on her mind. She doodled in her notebook as she tried to come up with a question to ask that didn't make her sound as stupid as 'how do I do magic?'

"That's an interesting question," Eleanor replied. "I think the difficult part would be whether or not any magic you did learn could work in a world where magic didn't exist."

"Do you really think it's possible to learn magic if you don't already know it? I mean, didn't even know it was real until I came here, which is really cool." Momoko propped her chin in her hand and grinned. "Not that I thought it wasn't real, but that it is!"

"Yes," she smiled back. "Absolutely. I myself didn't know it was real or even believed in magic until it appeared right before my eyes." Quite literally. "And now, I'm a mage."

Momoko bounced in her seat. "That happened to me too! When I got here, I saw people doing magic, real magic! And it was totally awesome! So you can learn it, then? Is it a class?" She hadn't seen it on the course list, but then again she hadn't really looked for 'magic 101'.

"Well, I'm not certain that it works that way. I think it depends a lot on the world a person comes from. Some seem to learn it, with others it appears to be inheirited."

Momoko blew a sigh and rolled her eyes. Unfair! "I wonder how can you tell which it is if your world doesn't even have magic? It would be so cool to learn!" She frowned. "So what exactly is a mage?"

"I honestly don't know. You could try asking if someone could teach you," she suggested.

"As for what a mage is," she drew in a breath, "I'm not certain if there is an easy answer. I guess being a mage is that there is some parts of magic casting that is ... more instristic? As in, using myself as an example, I do sometimes cast spells which require preparation and supplies, but other times, I just think of something and it happens."

"Does that make sense?"

Eleanor was there, sad that it was the last class.

Savannah was here, but she wasn't happy about this being the last class.
