Surviving Deep Space - Thursday, Period Two - 8/13

"I'm going to keep the lecture short today because our lesson is practical."

He gestured to the doors that were arrayed behind him.

"Each one of you will be entering a simulated psimoon. Psimoons, as the name might suggest, are planetoids which react to the mind of one person, adapting their terrain to mimic the person's mental state. Your mission, and you're going to accept it if I have to shove you through the door, the lot of you, is to explore your own psimoon and return 'alive' by the end of class.

"If you like it, you can even bring some of your friends to enjoy your psimoon. Once it's locked on an individual, it stays locked."

He beamed brilliantly.

"Good luck."

Like you've just had to see Rimmer naked and slathered in oil.

Now would be the time to mutiny. Or, you know, discuss what your psimoon might be like.

Set it up as you like and feel free to bring others in the class there if you think it's neat.

Who was looking almost pleased with himself, considering.

Ender looked mostly serene and totally not chatty at all. He had a fair idea of what his 'psimoon' would look like, and he'd had a taste of a reminder of it just a few weeks ago.

He'd visit, but he had no plans to take anyone with him at all.

Tahiri Veila

There was no actual mutiny from Tahiri's end, but the look on her face was definitely mutinous.

"No. Kriffing. Way in hell," she muttered.

She already knew her mental state was a mess. She didn't need the artistic rendering, thanks.

Karla glanced over to Tahiri. "Would you like to visit mine?" she asked quietly.

She couldn't guarantee it would be all unicorns and pickleberries, but it also certainly wouldn't involve Tahiri being tortured.

She raised her voice a bit to carry. "Anyone interested in visiting my head is welcome."

Danny looked... confused. "Um, I'd rather not," he grumbled under his breath, slouching at his desk.

Tahiri gave her a grateful look. If anybody knew exactly why she didn't want to do this . . . "I can't say I'd mind."

The configuration of Ender's surprised him in no way at all; he took a stroll, a lazy one, through the village of dwarves in the Giant's rotted body, tracing the lines of the ribs, down to the playground, and sat to stare up at the tower in thought. His legs curled underneath him, and he didn't need to look to notice that a hundred feet away or so, a stack of books had called themselves into being. It was an easy leap.

The only thing that surprised him was the perpetual layer of deep, dark mud that laid across every horizontal surface, clinging to his shoes and seeping into his pants. He didn't wonder.

Karla flashed her a sympathetic grin. "Black Widows go through something very similar to this during our training. Hopefully my inner barriers will keep some of the more uncomfortable parts at bay."

Yeah, there were several parts of her inner landscape she didn't need people seeing. And not all of them were bad. Some of them were too nice, when it came down to it.

"And if we do run into anything nasty, I can't say I wouldn't mind having a Jedi around to help."

"Then you'll be writing a six page paper on what you think it might look like," came the voice from behind him.

"I won't have slacking."

"Full Knight now, even." Tahiri flashed her a small grin; she was going to be sneaking that into conversations for a while yet, because wow. "Better your head than mine, at any rate."

Danny turned and looked at Rimmer. "I don't want to think about what it looks like, okay? That's the reason why I don't want to go in."

"I didn't want to either," he snapped with a rather flare-nosed glare directed at the young man, "but that didn't mean it didn't happen. Forewarned is forearmed. Six pages, please. As you aren't doing the activity, you have plenty of time to work."

Karla still wasn't entirely sure what it took to become a knight, but even she could sense that accomplishment and pride Tahiri had for that. "Congratulations!" she said. "Do I have to start using titles then? Full Knight Jedi Tahiri?"

Glaring all the while, Danny took out a pad of notebook paper and slapped it on his desk. He then tore out six pieces as loudly as possible. "My. Head. Is. Full. Of. Ghosts," he said, writing each word on a separate page as he said it. "There. Six pages."

"And mine was full of giant monsters and deadly swamps and hooded figures who tried to sacrifice me to a disgusting monster from the blackest pits of despair," he said, flabbergasted at the dullwitted child.

"Now, before I see you thrown in there, cadet, put some effort into it."

Tahiri offered a slight, self-deprecatory roll of her eyes. "Technically it's Jedi Veila, but please, I'm still just Tahiri." Not Riina. Just to make that distinction. "But thanks."
