Destiny & Free Will, Week V [Monday, Period 4]

As the students came in today, they'd probably all be pleased to notice the lack of desks. Instead, there were huge piles of pillows and blankets heaped around, and the television set up in front of the room. Ghanima was showing affection in the best way she knew how, with pastries from JGoB and carafes of coffee and juice from the Perk.

"We'll delay the discussion of the 'omnis' until next week," she said cheerfully, once everyone had picked a spot. "Today, we're watching a movie that involves destiny."

Karla sat on a blanket watching the movie with wide, delighted eyes. She wanted a Franjean of her very own.

Eleanor took a seat nearby and studied her friend closely for a minute. "How are you feeling?" she asked quietly.

(and sp notice in effect as I have a four hour class coming up *whimper*)

Karla took a moment and examined Eleanor, then leaned in to hug her, too. "I'm...dealing. It was tough fighting enemies who wore the faces of your friends," she said quietly.

Killing any Eleanor, even a trampy one like that, had been tough.

"I can't even imagine something like that," she said, returning the hug. "Have you seen Leda yet? She seemed very ... out of sorts for a while there."

"Not since I woke up," Karla said sadly. "Eleanor...if you see her..." Karla wasn't exactly sure how to say this. Protocol never covered how to explain to someone that an alternate version of themselves killed their friends. "...and she seems leery or skittish, it might be best if you give her some time, okay? Things were a bit tough over there."

And the understatement of the year award goes to...

She nodded, now wondering what exactly had happened. "I'll keep that in mind. Although I did see her when she first woke up."

"And she was okay?" Karla asked. She wasn't entirely up to seeing Leda yet. To face her, after having failed her like that...it was rough.

Karla was having a tough time all around interacting with people from that other universe. Hugging Savannah was one thing--they'd barely spoken while they'd been there. Talking to Eleanor was another--this Eleanor had stayed behind. Karla wasn't yet ready to talk to anyone that she'd interacted heavily with in that place. Not really.

"She ... was rather panicked, at first." Which was a mild way to put how she woke screaming. "But she calmed down and then..." Eleanor tilted her head. "She asked to feel my pulse."

"There was a version of you in that other world," Karla said slowly, carefully. "That Eleanor was a vampire."

Eleanor had heard some things about that other world, about the existance of vampires there, but...the idea that she would be one of them...

All she could think to ask was, "How? I mean...why me?"

"You're gifts, I'm betting," Karla said quietly. "Most vampires were especially vulnerable to fire. You weren't."

"Oh. I suppose that makes some sense," she admitted. Then, after a moment, quietly, "I ... almost don't want to know what I did there, but some part of me wants to anyway."

"You don't have to tell me, of course," she added. She could always find out from someone she didn't know quite so well. Maybe it would be better that way.

"I will tell you if you really wish to know," Karla said quietly. It would hurt, but she would spare Leda that pain.

Eleanor considered for a long moment. She did want to know, but didn't want Karla to go through any more than she already had.

"Only if you feel up to it. I understand if you don't want to talk about it."

"I don't, not really," Karla said. "But it is your right to know. Especially since it might affect things between you and Leda, at least for a little while."

Karla looked away for a moment, composing herself and her thoughts. "You may be able to get more information out of Dinah. As a vampire, she knew other-you better than I did. My first major interaction with you was the night that other-you killed Leda." Her eyes were soft and compassionate as she broke the news to Eleanor. "I think she made Leda enjoy her death, by magic, but she bled her dry. I arrived too late. The vampire was done and Leda was too far gone to save."

And then, as if that wasn't enough; "During the final battle, we chanced upon one another. That's not true, I had been actively searching for your--her--magic. I found her and we fought and...I won." No need to give the graphic details. Eleanor could surely understand what winning entailed.

"I'm so sorry." Karla hid behind the curtain of her hair, waiting for Eleanor to respond.

There was a long moment of silence as she digested this. Leda. She'd killed Leda? Little wonder Leda reacted the way she had upon seeing her.

"I ... don't know what to say. I wouldn't have ever thought myself capable of such acts." She studied Karla for a moment. "There's nothing for you to be sorry about. You did what you had to."

"That wasn't you," Karla said, fiercely, raising her head to look at Eleanor. "That was a creature with your face. It had your powers, your memories, but that's all."

Dammit, she had to cling to that belief. Otherwise, she'd go mad.

"My memories? How so?"
