Destiny & Free Will, Week V [Monday, Period 4]

As the students came in today, they'd probably all be pleased to notice the lack of desks. Instead, there were huge piles of pillows and blankets heaped around, and the television set up in front of the room. Ghanima was showing affection in the best way she knew how, with pastries from JGoB and carafes of coffee and juice from the Perk.

"We'll delay the discussion of the 'omnis' until next week," she said cheerfully, once everyone had picked a spot. "Today, we're watching a movie that involves destiny."

Merlin most certainly did come to class. Because class had the decency to make sense.

"Commander?" Karla said quietly, stepping next to him.

"M'lady," Merlin replied, managing a small grin at seeing her.

Karla wasn't really grinning. She seemed to be fighting back a good cry. "Are you okay with hugs?" she asked, tremulously.

Merlin frowned, looking around once to see if anyone would care before hugging her. Francine certainly would not have a problem with this, he thought.

"Were you there? Like Arthur?"

Karla nodded, unwilling to say more. She wasn't sure what Arthur had told him, if Merlin knew he had died. But another version of him had sacrified himself for others, for her, and Karla needed a moment to thank his other self and reassure herself that this Merlin was alive and well.

"You know m-me, Commander," she said, trying to joke. "Always trying to g-get my hands on you."

Merlin snorted in wry amusement. "I'm onto your tricks, Karla."

Weird how he wasn't letting go yet, though.

"It's alright," Merlin said low enough that anyone else would have to strain to hear. "Everyone is safe here."

"I kn-know," she said, clinging for just a fraction of a moment, "but I need to feel that for myself, I think."

Most of the injured, the broken, and the dead she'd dealt with back home had been strangers. These had been her friends.

"I was proud of other-you," she said quietly. "I'm glad that not everything was different there."

Merlin, of course, was an utter girl and pressed a quick kiss to here forehead to reassure her everything was indeed alright. "Arthur told me about the--um--how things happened there. I hope we were friends there as well."

"I'm sure they were," Karla said quietly. "She did some really dumb things when she found out other-you had...So, yes. I think so." She hugged him tightly and then let go. "Maybe sometime we could mess around with some herbs in Lady Ghanima's office again?" she asked. "I can make sure you're not ignoring my herbal."

Her smile was small and a bit watery, but genuine.

"I would be delighted to, Karla," Merlin replied with exaggerated formality.

"I would, too. I'm just not sure if that description will apply to Lady Ghanima," Karla sniffed. "I mean, we mucked about with her herbs for how long last time?" The smile got a little bigger.

Probably long enough to earn a roll of her eyes at the children.

"As long as we clean up after!"

Karla wiped at her eyes and nodded. "Course we will. She's got the best collection I've seen outside of Kaeleer. Not gonna jeopardize that."

"Thanks, Merlin. I needed that hug."

"Any time," Merlin assured her. "That's a bit of what friends are for after all."

"You're a good one," she assured him, before heading back to her blanket.
