Flight and Flying [Tuesday, July 28, 4th period]

When the students entered the flight shed, they would notice a sequence of lights spread across the ceiling.

"Meet Drol," Anakin said, waving his hand as he walked in a few seconds late. He hadn't planned on taking a nap in his office, and the dream had been especially vivid--and odd. He shook his head. "The god of the moon of Iego, who brings destruction to all those who attempt to leave." He snorted. "In reality, Drol is a system of laser emitters programmed to track onto a ship as it hits orbit and blow it out of the sky. That same technology was later used to exterminate entire planets. We'll get to in a few classes. For today, you will be piloting a G9 Rigger freighter, which is neither sexy nor particularly speedy, but it's your first time flying in space, so you need something that can take a little beating up."

He flashed them a tiny smile. "For you beginners, you will only have to navigate around the asteroids in Iego's atmosphere. People with a little more experience will face off against Drol. Figure out how to disable the system without exploding, please."

He clasped his hands together in front of him and tried not give Peter a confused look. The dream hadn't been real. "Begin."

Get used to the ship's controls--and being out in space--before attempting the exercises.

Being in space was kind of cool. Claire was happy to have some practice with the controls before trying the exercise though.

Danny was going much, much slower this week.

Hoshi was glad to have a practice run, especially since she felt rather tired.

Technically, it wasn't her first time flying in space... She'd been to the moon more than once, after all. But she did need a few minutes to get used to the freighter.

"Tch!" Momoko worked the controls, irritated. She didn't consider herself an elitist, but she was really not a fan of flying freighters: they were so sloooooow and not at all cool! She frumped her way through the practice run, her mind mostly on whether or not Professor Skywalker would let her fly against the laser god... Surely they'd pilot a supercool ship or mecha for an exercise like that!

Yes, Anakin thinks this is the easier route. Various bits of space debris float past you: ships blown up by Drol, mostly, with some satellites and rocks tossed in for flavor. The way is fairly clear if you don't drift too far to the left or right. Or down.

If you're new to thinking in all dimensions, you're probably going to ding the freighter up some. The weapons are live, too, if you want to attempt shooting your way clear.

With the engines at full speed, you can get through the mess in about five minutes. If you're going slower, it'll take longer.

Sometimes a lot longer.

There are various bits of debris around for you, too--ship segments and asteroids mostly--drifting away from an asteroid that seems suspiciously free of stuff in its way. ~~It's also round and vaguely Death Star shaped. The canon, it isn't subtle~~. Use your tractor beam to fling some debris out to discover where Drol starts killing ships (you can't outrun the web, not that Anakin has exactly mentioned that), then disable where the laser emitters are coming from so you can fly awaaaaay.

Watch your fellow classmates bump into things or explode. Ahh. Fun.

Claire was in a pretty good mood today while she waited for her turn.

This was an experience he had during the Clone Wars. Anyone mentioning angels coming from Iego will get smacked.

Anakin was totally not shooting Peter odd looks when he thought no one was noticing. Really.

Jess had to admit that the stuff Anakin came up with for this class was pretty cool.

He'd never admit it out loud, but he was willing to think it in the safety of his own head.

Claire was wondering the same thing.

"It's a shame you don't get to play in the sims with us," she told Peter.

"Sam's are more than enough for me," Peter said, joking.

"Huh?" Claire asked.

"It's a game he's got on his computer," Peter said. "Lame joke, sorry."

"Oh, right," Claire said with a giggle. "Not quite the same as feeling like you are flying in space though."

"Definitely not," Peter agreed. Then, because he had lingering concern about Sam, he asked, "How are you doing?"

"I'm good," Claire said. "Glad to be back in the dorms. Glad Jon is no longer a puppy. You?"

"Same on all counts," Peter said. "Though change out Jon for Sam."

Claire pouted. "You're not glad Jon is human again? I'm glad Sam is."

She was teasing, yes.

"More glad about Sam," Peter amended.

Claire smiled. "The four of us should go out sometime."

"I don't think Jon and Sam will be as into the play date idea," Peter said.

"I was thinking more along the lines of dinner. Maybe a movie?"

Because Claire was determined to make Peter like Jon.

"Dinner's good," Peter said. "Allows for conversation."

"Conversation's good," Claire agreed. "Especially when it's friendly."

"I can be friendly," Peter said.

"I know you can," Claire said with a smile. "That's why you're my favorite uncle."

Never mind that he was the only uncle she was aware she had. Because even if she did know about Flint, Peter would be her favorite.

"I am pretty awesome," Peter agreed, teasing.

"Must be genetic," Claire grinned.

"See that I would not agrue," Peter told her.

"What would you argue?" Claire wondered.

"That Petrelli blood is less than awesome," Peter replied.

Claire nodded. "That's a good thing to argue."

Because Petrelli blood was awesome. Even if it made you make stupid decisions.

OMG, the new season of Clone Wars looks kickass!
