Surviving Deep Space - Thursday, Period Two - 7/23

Rimmer looked unpleasantly cheerful this morning as the students came in to sit at their desks.

"Well, class, today it seems we'll be doing a theoretical lesson concerning a creature called a 'polymorph'. Other forms, such as the 'emohawk' used by the Kinitawowi, can be quite troublesome as well, but there's really nothing like a wild polymorph.

"They can appear to be anything, from a rubber ball to a screaming hellbeast from the sewers, but most importantly, they act to bring about an especially strong emotional response which they then feed off of and subsequently remove from the victim until the polymorph is destroyed.

"So today, we will be cataloging our strongest, most vulnerable emotions and how we might be able to cope without them."

...worry, he's still smirking.

[ocd up!] [for info on a polymorph, check out here]

...it really didn't take a genius to add a lecture and a smirk of dimwitted self satisfaction together to equate to a circumstance.

And Valentine was a genius, so...

She was making sure to remain blithely aware of the fact that anything in the room right now might be eager to turn into a rubber ball or a screaming hellbeast.

Ender wasn't going to wonder.

He knew, and he wasn't going to do it. Simple as that.

So he sat back, unobtrusively, and was once again grateful for his relatively unassuming position in class; he kept on his guard for any surprises.

Yeah, so a polymorph fed on your strongest emotions and now Rimmer wanted them to kindly and conveniently write all those emotions down and talk about them. If that didn't have disaster stamped all over it, she didn't know what did. So, in lieu of the assignment, Valentine was writing down a continuation of the dirty, dirty football story that she and Emma had been weaving last night.

Let the polymorphs feed of that.

Karla was slowly sinking into her chair. This was so. Not. Good. Mother night, why this assignment today?! While she wasn't a Wiggin, she was certainly smart enough to figure out what Rimmer was smirking at.

Idly, she wondered if she could smack him. Not whether it was permissible, but actually possible.

She just should have skipped class like she'd thought about doing earlier.

Karla was just staring at the paper in front of her. Technically, she could write down 'nigh-paralyzing terror' and 'acute vulnerability' but why play along with his stupid jokes? It's not like whatever polymorph was in the room wasn't already aware of that anyway.

Re: Do the Assignment

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Anemone was mildly crazy, not blindly stupid, and she had a Thing about older men in psuedo-positions of authority trying to manipulate her.

She blamed her childhood.

Rather than just stomping out of the room, however, Anemone grabbed her pen almost viciously before jotting down fear of cute puppies, hatred of tasty pie, and terror of nice naps.

There. Let him try to manipulate that.

Ben wasn't a fan of sharing his deepest vulnerabilities with people he liked, let alone a classroom full of students.

He slammed his emotional walls up as high as they could go and assumed a look of bland disinterest.

Eventually, Ender did contribute. But only to the writing.

Fear of heights, he wrote down, easily. Fear of snakes.

Then he sat back again.

So, do the polymorphs sense what will cause the strongest emotion and turn into that, like the Harry Potter version of a boggart? Or do they just stick to a shape and soak up whatever emotions are available?

Re: OOC

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*uses totally wrong journal but!*

They sense what will cause the strongest emotion and turn into something that will aggravate it. For example with Rimmer, it turned into his mother who intimated that she'd been sleeping with Lister and kept telling him how WONDERFUL it'd been. Rimmer finally burst out screaming and the polymorph whapped him and turned him into a total treehugging pacifist.

I vaguely remember that episode, actually.

So, no objections if Karla totally freaks out and gets melodrama all over the class?

Re: OOC

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no objections; individual members of the class would have to be asked on their own for anything that involved them.
