Debt! And How to Get Out of It- 1st Period- Class #2

Having handwavily instructed everyone to meet in the computer lab, Lily waited for everyone to take a seat at a computer before beginning. "Welcome back, everyone. Today I'm going to introduce you to something both horrible and wonderful, both at the same time. Ladies and... Yakko, meet: the credit card."

She held up one of those plastic fakes given to you by the companies before you applied, letting everyone have a chance to look at it. "These things, if you don't know, are fake money. You go into a store, hand them this card, and as long as it's under your limit, you can get away with using it to pay for anything. Unless you like American Express or Discover, then they get picky. This is all fine and good, but the problem is, you have to pay it back. And they let you do it over time and then charge you interest on what you haven't paid yet and next thing you know, it's a slippery slope into the poorhouse. But at least you probably have really nice shoes.

"And the credit card companies? Do they care if you can't pay? Noooooo. They give these to college kids. College kids! Who are more concerned about parties and their next sandwich and whether Mom's sent money yet. So people just rack up insane debt, and you can't call them up going, "Oh, sorry, Mr. Visa Worker, I live on a schoolteacher's salary, I can't really pay this bill unless I take up who- doing things my husband wouldn't appreciate," because they will laugh maniacally at you."

No, they wouldn't.

"But today we're going to forget all that," she said cheerily. "We're going to rack ourselves up some credit card debt with a little thing we call online shopping. You each have a computer, and I've put some standard shopping sites in the bookmarks for you to start off with. You can visit other sites, just remember these are school computers. Don't actually buy anything, or if you do, know that you yourself really will have to pay for it. Say you have a $10,000 limit on your credit card. Keep track of whatever you would hypothetically buy, and see how much debt you can rack up or the rest of the period. Whatever you end up with, that's what you're going to work with till the end of the summer."

She started to let them do their own thing, then said, "Oh, and if you've never used a computer, I'm right over here."

Claudia tuned out once she heard they were going to be shoppppppping. Best class ever!

Why no, Claudia wasn't not learning the right lesson.

Oh! Adora had used this internet for sports class! She was excited to try it with something else!

Hoshi paid close attention totally the lecture. They didn't use credit cards (or cash, for that matter) in the future, and it didn't make sense to her why someone should have to pay back an exorbitant amount of interest for purchases made.

Yakko sat quietly in his seat. Not moving. Not doing anything silly. Not even blinking.

If his ears didn't waggle once every couple minutes, people might think he was just a statue.

Five minutes on Bluefly and Claudia had already dropped three grand on Jimmy Choo shoes. Yay (http://adn.is.bluefly.com/mgen/Bluefly/prodImage.ms?productCode=302884401&width=157&height=188) for (http://adn.is.bluefly.com/mgen/Bluefly/prodImage.ms?productCode=304052501&width=157&height=188) adorable (http://adn.is.bluefly.com/mgen/Bluefly/prodImage.ms?productCode=303066401&width=157&height=188) shoes (http://adn.is.bluefly.com/mgen/Bluefly/prodImage.ms?productCode=301828801&width=157&height=188)! And now to find outfits to match!

Shoes (http://www.bluefly.com/Velvet-Angels-blue-suede-and-patent-Bottomline-thong-wedges/cat750236/303554702/detail.fly), boots (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod86380012&parentId=cat17850768&masterId=&index=11&cmCat=cat000000cat000141cat13030734cat17850768), and matching purses (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/frg_popupProductDetail.jhtml?item=prod86460081&prodId=prod86460081&cmosSuperClassForLookUp=410&cmosClassForLookUp=54&saleFlag=false&productTypeMws=0&mwsInfo=details&cmosDesignerNameForLookUp=Valentino&showMoreInfoType=product) were all Adora's!

Okay, and maybe some more boots (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod86320044&parentId=cat17850768&masterId=&index=39&cmCat=cat000000cat000141cat13030734cat17850768). They so reminded her of her old uniform, but cuter.

And then she started considering if she found a really adorable dress, whether these shoes (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod67870145&parentId=cat13030777&masterId=cat13030764&index=85&cmCat=cat000000cat000141cat13030734cat13030764cat13030777) would make her taller than Edward and if that really mattered...wait, what was the point of the lesson?

Hoshi noticed right away that there was a sale at Bluefly. It didn't take her long to find a really cool dress (http://www.bluefly.com/Vera-Wang-Lavender-Label-light-purple-charmeuse-bow-detail-halter-dress/cat80012/303050601/detail.fly). But the dress would require a new bra (http://www.bluefly.com/Le-Mystere-black-Shameless-4-in-1-underwire-bra/cat20142/303187201/detail.fly), and if she was getting the bra, she might as well get the matching panties (http://www.bluefly.com/Le-Mystere-black-mesh-Sophie-boy-shorts/cat20148/302282402/detail.fly). And probably a new purse (http://www.bluefly.com/Jalda-black-new-croc-Audrey-convertible-clutch/cat20430/302489501/detail.fly) as well. Unfortunately, she ran out of town before she could pick out shoes.

It took Yakko about ten seconds before he called out, "Done!"

Re: Final results

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yakko had found two (http://cgi.ebay.com/WALT-DISNEYS-SILLY-SYMPHONY-MOVIE-POSTER_W0QQitemZ140268747662QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item20a8ab3b8e&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116) items (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-DISNEY-SILLY-SYMPONIES-RUG-1930s-DONALD-DUCK_W0QQitemZ170331658226QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27a88ed7f2&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116) for a grand total of $10,000. Fake money not spent was fake money wasted, after all.
